Mail-notification does not detect my thunderbird mailboxes

Asked by Diogo Oliveira

Hi

I may be quite noob at this, but isn't mail-notification supposed to autodetect the mail boxes I have configured in thunderbird, listing them automatically on startup?
If not, how do I configure mail-notification to get them?

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy, and both Thunderbird and mail-notification from its repositories.

Thanks.

Mail notification with thunderbird works in the following ways :

1. Thunderbird gets mail, notification agent informs you
----------
1. Thunderbird must be running and checking for new mail on a regular basis - it can be minimised though.
2. The mail notification agent checks whether the inbox for thunderbird has changed - if so it pops up a "new mail" message.

However, if thunderbird is running then *it* will pop up a notification of new mail, which makes the notification agent of limited value in this case.

In this case you set the "Mailbox type" to autodetect, and browse to your inbox using the browse button.

2. Notification agent checks mail, starts thunderbird
----------

You can configure the mail agent to check the server that thunderbird gets mail from, then when you get new mail at the server you can click on the mail-notification icon which will start thunderbird and download your mail for you.

In this case, you enter the details required by the agent to check for new mail at the server by setting the mailnox type to POP3 and entering your server/username/password as required.

Which of these two methods did you expect to be using?

Thanks. I was expecting mail-notification to autodetect the mailboxes
that i've configured in thunderbird, without needing to start it. That
is, I thought mail-notification was going to the thunderbird profile
directory and, somehow, extract the info about my mailboxes and show
them on the list. That said, I was expecting an hybrid between the two
forms you mentioned: mail-notification gets mailboxes info, notification
checks mail, starts thunderbird.
I guess i was thinking too much ahead ;-)
I'll try the second way, that'll fit my purpose. I didn't go that way
yet just because I thought this was all automatic. And, because I don't
critically need a mail checker ;-)

Thanks Andy
