Test restarting imports of upstream systemd to Launchpad VCS

Asked by Peter J. Mello

I'd like to inquire if there's any willingness by the Launchpad admins to kickstart the automatic imports of the upstream systemd Git repository (<https://github.com/systemd/systemd.git>) into Launchpad (<https://code.launchpad.net/~registry/systemd/+git/systemd>) again. They were suspended ~4 years ago due to underlying issues with the infrastructure here, but as I review the record of those conversations[0][1][2] that were had at the time and associated big tickets[3] and MRs[4], it appears at first glance that the blockers have all been resolved in the intervening time elapsed.

As systemd's become such a critical piece of the Linux ecosystem currently, it really would be ideal to generate source packages from it again, if at all possible. Enough has changed in the nuts and bolts of the infrastructure here in these last few years that I don't believe anyone could say with certainty whether or not the imports would be successful going forward without simply turning them on again and observing the process in vivo.

What do you say, can we give it a whirl?

Hey Peter! Sorry for the late reply, but we should ask William for more context about that. Is it urgent ?

Hi Simone!

No, this isn't urgent. I thought it would be a relatively simple experiment just to kickstart the imports again and watch the results (seeing as the system would revert the import to a disabled state after 25 hours elapsed, if they continued to prove unsuccessful), but if you wish to gather more information first, of course I defer to your judgment. While I'm interested in seeing the nightly builds of systemd becoming active again, I confess to having no pressing need for them beyond a personal interest in testing some as-yet-unreleased new features. I promise to be patient as the process unfolds, and look forward to hearing any further details you may uncover.

Warmly,
Peter
