adding ppa to mint 17 xfce and updating gives 404 not found

Asked by J

did the usual add-apt-repos etc, did the apt-get update, all under sudo; this is the end ofthe terminal output;

Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com qiana/upstream Translation-en
Fetched 937 kB in 10s (92.5 kB/s)
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-retro/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-retro/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

This is all on an old dell dimension 2400 with both original onboard intel grphics and the marginally better nvidia riva tnt2 m64. Neither are detected and as such am try to get at least one of them 'possesed' so I can get past the mediocre resolution mint is currently allowing.

am I missing something? apart from finding the repos.

That PPA (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/ubuntu/x-retro/+packages) only provides packages for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid). You've asked for trusty, which is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, for which the PPA provides nothing.
