The eeschema file menu is missing Open and New

Asked by David Schultz

I just installed KiCAD on a Windows 10 laptop. I am trying to open an existing schematic using eeschema. I create a new project from the KiCAD main menu and then click on eeschema. It opens up with a blank schematic page. I click on the File menu and half of it is missing. There is no "New" or "Open". It starts at "Save".

I have uninstalled and reinstalled with the same result. This is crazy and frustrating!

I downloaded the installer from the 64-bit CERN link: https://kicad-downloads.s3.cern.ch/windows/stable/kicad-5.1.2_2-x86_64.exe

I have searched the bug list for anything on this and found nothing.

I would guess that you have started Eeschema from within KiCad. In this mode, you are working in the schematic sheets that are linked to the project.

If you'd like to open independent schematic sheets, you'll need to run eeschema as a separate application.

It doesn't seem to let me do that. The eeschema icon is grayed out if I
haven't opened a project(?)

You'll need to launch eeschema separately (not from within KiCad). This is installed alongside the main KiCad application

Can you help with this problem?
