Offline footprint library

Asked by Matthias

Hello,

what is the preferred way to get the footprint librarys local? I have to work offline from time to time, so I don´t have access to GitHub.

Thanks,

Matthias

Hi Matthias,

There is Footprint Libraries Wizard which allows you to store a copy of the libraries on your hard drive. To do so:
- run pcbnew
- from 'Preferences' menu select 'Footprint Libraries Wizard'
- check 'Github repository' and 'Save a local copy to:'
- continue with further dialogs, as you click 'Next' button

Orson

@Orson
Some of users are still confused with online libraries, maybe the reason is that fp-lib-table with links to online libraries are provided with installation.
What do you think about removing the github fp-lib-table? Users should be redirected to the wizard (by the pop-up showing when kicad is run first time or better when user opens footprint viewer with empty fp-lib-table). This way everybody will easily find the wizard and learn how it works. If wizard can build fp-lib-table it seems to be unnecessary to provide additional table with content of kicad github.
Another thing to my wishlist: add warning that libraries on github may change when "github repository" is selected and "save a local copy to" is not selected. Users shouldn't expect the libraries on kicad github (and others not owned by them) are stable.

Hi michalstec,

In general I think it might be a good idea, but it would be better to discuss it on the developer mailing list.
