Object missing colors.

Asked by Gary Sorley

I have drawn a rectangle with blue color. I have added letters to the sign is gold colors. I am sizing the "sign" to be used on an HO Scale (1/87) building on my Model Railroad. However, when I move the sign to the page for printing, everything works fine. The Backround color of blue appears along with the lettering "K&G'S" IN VERTICAL and gold color. However, when I reduce this "sign" to the correct size for application (6mm X 20mm) only the gold lettering appears. The blue background does not get printed.
I am running Inkscape v 0.91 for MAC and version Sierra 10.12.6.
I have already printed specific signs like this in the past without any issues. Can't figure out my problem!

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary,

can you share a file with both images via some cloud storage service? And perhaps do 'print to file' and also share the pdfs that produces?

Hi Hachmann, and thanks for the response. I tried Printing to File to
Desktop location, and the result was the same as when I try to print. The
Gold "K&G's" is there, but the blue background is not there. Perhaps
before we proceed sharing a file with you I should explain what I am trying
to accomplish. A sign for a model building. Basically, I would draw a
rectangle in this case with the fill color of blue. Then I add the text on
top of the rectangle in the color gold. This provides a "sign" in blue
background with gold lettering. However, if I print the original sign in
regular size, it prints with both colors on paper. However, when I shrink
the sign to scale, only the gold prints.
I have made previous signs, with different color lettering over a white
background, and they have worked. However, I tried printing one of the old
signs that I have, and the green lettering did not come through, only
black. Perhaps I am trying to do something that should work with layers?
Please keep in mind that I am NOT an expert in Inkscape nor on computers.
Knowledgeable enough to get in trouble, but not to get out of it!
I appreciate your patience, and is there a way to accomplish my task that I
am unaware of? It would seem to be a simple task in Inkscape. Or, maybe
I'm not "filling the color right and outlining the stroke"? Did I just
answer my own question??

Thanks again,
Gary.

I think this might have to do with some specifics of the file, like outline width, or some pattern. But I cannot check for known bugs without the files.

If you prefer to not share them for some reason (or an example file that has the same issue), you can also browse the bug reports section here, and try to see if the issue is known already:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape

As for making a new report, developers would also need an example to be able to reproduce the issue.

Or, another idea would be to update your Inkscape version. For 0.92.2, there's a dmg for macOS available. Perhaps that will already solve the issue.

I went ahead and installed Inkscape 0.92.2 and the printing came out the same. I have no problems sharing the files with you, but am not that knowledgable of exactly how I would go about getting those files, and sending them to you. If you have the patience to instruct me as to how to accomplish this, I would be more than willing to take on the task as I really appreciate your help.

In the meantime, I will visit the "bugs" and research if there is anything in there! Let me know.

Thanks, Gary

Ah, that's too bad, that updating didn't help :-(

There are many possible ways to share a file via internet (e.g. google drive, dropbox,...) - if you have ever used one of those services, and feel comfortable using it, I'd recommend going that way.

If this is all new to you, a very easy option is to visit

https://framadrop.org/

and upload the files there, then post the links it gives you here.
(framadrop is a website hosted by a French open source software community. The service is free, and the people are sympathetic :) )

Thanks, and I would try that, but when I updated to 0.92.2, I apparently
lost my old files, at least all but one. The one file that still remains
is also one I used to create "signs" for my buildings, and it printed OK
with the background color and the lettering a different color. Any
suggestions on how to get back the old files?

Hi Meren. Here's some files that I have been able to find and attach.
The first file is the PDF output from Print to file that I'm having issues
with. The other two files have been successful in making the "signs" if
was looking for. I'm still trying to locate my last K&G file in Inkscape
to send to you. I know the file name, but right now can't find it on the
computer to attach.

Hope these will help.

Gary, unfortunately email attachments do not work here at all, that is why I suggested using those cloud services.
Everything we write, if by email or not, ends up here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/656690

(I'm glad you seem to have found your files again, though - that would have been very annoying :-( )

I found the files going back on my computer to the "Backups". I could not
seem to get them here but forwarded to you each file through Apple email.
I hope that you received them and were able to look at them also. I am
very perplexed as in the old files I made several signs, reduced them and
printed them out, and they are now on buildings on my layout.

I opened the files and looked at all the document specs, and they match the
ones I am having issues with. Just can't seem to get the background color
printed. The size of the "sign" is correct, but only the letters are
printed. Very confusing!

Unfortunately, Gary, sending any files per email (as an email attachment) does not work here, so I do not receive them. Email answers are just a convenience. We are really talking via comments here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/656690

If you would like me to take a look at them, please visit

https://framadrop.org/

and upload the files there, then post the links it gives you here, and add a description as to how they print for you / what does or does not work for each file (else I cannot know what to look for). It's best to give me step-by-step instructions where I need to click, and what I need to select in each dialog, so I can try to reproduce your issue(s).

Hi Meren! It looks like I have ventured deeper into this subject than I
have the knowledge to get the correct answer. I had pulled the files back
from a computer backup disk, but have lost them again. I found some and
tried to use the program you suggested but could not get the files to be
sent. I've just concluded that I should again go to updated Inkscape
Manual and try some of the tutorials again. This should answer my
question, I hope. It seems so simple, but apparently is complicated. No
matter how I try to configure it, the background color does not come out
when I have the text in it. However, if I just have the background color
and text separate, both are printed in print preview and on the page.

Guess I will just give up at this time, or at least until I have gained
more knowledge of Inkscape to help you help me!

Thank you so much for your time and patience attempting to solve this
issue.

Best and Kindest Regards,
Gary.

:-( Sorry.

Perhaps, as an alternative, the Inkscape forum at http://inkscapeforum.com will be useful to you. It allows to directly upload files, making it easier for everyone, and people there are very helpful, usually.

Hi Meren, me again, sorry to bother you again. I just wanted to run this
by you to see what you think about this.
In Inkscape, draw a rectangle on a new canvas with blue as the color. Draw
another rectangle, smaller then the blue in red. Add another rectangle in
yellow. Now move the two smaller rectangles onto the blue rectangle
(object). Group them, and then move them to the page for printing. Select
print. Then Print preview......only the original blue is shown as
printing. This is my dilemma, what happened to the other color objects.
And, how would you go about getting all three rectangles to print.

Hi Gary,

can you check the stroke width of the smaller rectangles that seem to be missing? There is some threshold for it that makes objects vanish on export... It's a known bug.

Click on the object (when grouped, you can hold down Ctrl to select it directly), and then look into the field for the stroke in the bottom left corner. If it's any color but 'None' and a number smaller than ... not sure here, actually... much smaller than 1, for sure, then try what happens if you set the stroke to 'None' ('remove' in right-click menu in the bottom left corner, or X in the fill and stroke dialog).

MEREN -- YOU are an Inkscape Wizard! Problem solved! Completely. I went
ahead and created several different "signs" of no significance but to just
test them all out. And -- Wallahh! They all print out correctly for size,
color and clarity!

I thank you so much for your patience with me and my inability to explain
to you exactly what the issue was. But......because you stayed with me and
hung in there........I finally found my answer! Thank you for your time,
expertise, knowledge of Inkscape and patience with a novice user. You have
made my day!

Gary Sorley

Thank you, Gary, that's very kind of you :)

We were also a bit lucky, as we just had a similar issue on the forums, that reminded me of this bug. I hope it's going to be fixed soon!

Can you help with this problem?
