Can Inkscape output drawings to an hpgl plotter?

Asked by Joe Selander

I read somewhere that Inkscape could output in the HPGL format, but I didn't see that option anywhere in the help file.

I have a plotter that accepts HPGL. Can I use Inkscape to write to my plotter?

TIA
Joe Selander

Hello Joe.

Yes, Inkscape could save picture as HGPL, as I see it in 'Save As' dialog.

The result file contains such data as: IN;SP1;PU863.87245,1207.3223;PD865.44509,1213.1915;PD867.9237,1212.3976;PD897.73746,1229.6362;PD880.52916,1259.4419;PD877.98569,

that seems to be HGPL, isn't it? :)

I use latest snapshot of Inkscape, got it at http://inkscape.modevia.com/

Also there are some interesting info you could find in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171190
and http://hpgs.berlios.de/ - HPGL Script open source HPGL/2 interpreter

And also, Inkscape provide support for read/write DXF format now!

Hope that info will be useful!

I do not see HPGL as an format option in the "Save As" dialog box. ( Inkscape 0.46)

I would like to directly save or export files from Inkscape in the HP-GL format.

Is there something missing? Please advise

Thankyou

Hello again CalG

As I described above (maybe it was not enough clear, sorry if so) - HGPL support provided by development version of Inkscape (0.46dev atm).

So you could easily grab a development snapshot of Inkscape from various locations e.g:

*) if you use Windows - http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/?C=M;O=D (the last version is http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape21570-0906121805.7z from 12 June)

*) if you use Ubuntu - https://launchpad.net/~inkscape-nightly/+archive/ppa

As alternative, you could use 0.47pre version
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438&package_id=99112&release_id=689221
and, https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.testers/+archive/ppa

Cheerz,
Oleg

Thank you for the clarification on the "latest snapshot".

I had just installed Inkscape using the ubuntu package manager and assumed
it was the latest. I will give 0.46dev version a try!
