An image is all black and I want to change parts of it to another color. How do I isolate those parts?

Asked by Linda Montag

I downloaded an svg image that is all black, a fireman badge. I ungrouped but that did not isolate the ladder, hydrant and some words I want to change to white. When I break apart it looks like a mess. I'm new to Inkscape. How to I isolate some of the design to change the colors so it is not all black?

Hard to say without seeing it. Maybe you can post a link to the original?

In the meantime you could try Menu: View>Display Mode>Outline to see if the objects are there. You can select objects in outline mode and switch back to normal and apply another fill color.

attached is the svg file I bought. I would like to make the axes and
emblem red and make the words, ladder and hydrant white. But it is all
one color and becomes all red or all white. I tried break apart and it
becomes all black. Thinking I need to save it as an image and then
trace it?

You might need to upload to dropbox or similar, and post the link. I didn't get the attachment because I replied via the webpage.

I'll subscribe to this topic and see if I can get attachments, but in the meantime, a link might be a good idea.

Yeah, all the elements were actually a single path. After breaking it apart all paths had a black fill. The process is basically going through and selecting the paths with the node tool and filling the ones with white.

Here's a version with stuff you can more easily work with :
