look down the inkscape window, on the status bar, the dimesions are displayed while you drag a shape or a line.

Once the shape is done you can switch to the select tool (arrow) and the dimensions will be this time on the tool control controls bar.

Thank you for your reply! I still need clarification, so I will elaborate on my question:
If I draw a rectangle, for example 10 X 12 cm, and I want to label these measurements on to the rectangle so it can be read as a technical diagram, is there a command that will do this automatically without me having to type them in as a separate text entry?

I have another question:
If I want to work simultaneously on multiple pages from the same canvas, How do I create page 2,3,4 etc without opening a new file for each page?> To: <email address hidden>> From: <email address hidden>> Subject: Re: [Question #58858]: automatically print dimensions inside a rectangle> Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2009 14:41:56 +0000> > Your question #58858 on Inkscape changed:> https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/58858> > Status: Open => Answered> > RIco proposed the following answer:> look down the inkscape window, on the status bar, the dimesions are> displayed while you drag a shape or a line.> > Once the shape is done you can switch to the select tool (arrow) and the> dimensions will be this time on the tool control controls bar.> > -- > If this answers your question, please go to the following page to let us> know that it is solved:> https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/58858/+confirm?answer_id=0> > If you still need help, you can reply to this email or go to the> following page to enter your feedback:> https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/58858> > You received this question notification because you are a direct> subscriber of the question.

ok, sorry it seems I didn't understood your question the first time. You can do it atomatically but.. only for a path. That means you have to convert your objects to paths before applying the filter.

so
1.select your path
2. Effects Menu > Visualize Path > Measure Path
3. set the font and offset of your label , precision , scale, unit etc.. and Apply

the limitation of this technique is that I think it will work only for a single path, means that if you apply it to a rectangle (after converting it to a path Shift+Ctrl+C) it will give you the perimeter, so you'll have to separate the edges to get height and width.

Another way to do it with width and height would be to apply first the "Dimensions" (effects menu>visualize path>Dimensions...) effect and then apply the "measure path" effect to the arrows path (you have to ungroup them first (fast double click on it)).
To apply those effects your object must be selected firs of course.

As for the multiple pages, Inkscape doesn't support it. So you have 2 options:
1. use layers as pages
or
2. use scribus, you can import .svg into scribus, so you do your work in Inkscape and import it into a multi-pages scribus document (www.scribus.net)

I hope this helps.
