how do I draw a box with lines in it

Asked by Ryan

I am new to this as well. When I exported a graphic for Bitmap and it is saved to PNG, I cannot make it editable again. How do you transform it or edit it after it is exported? Also, How do I seperate a pictures layers that I imported from another program?

... you can't. once you export it to png it becomes a raster image so you won't be able to modify the vectors anymore. To keep the image editable you must save it as .svg. keep always the original svg file for further edits. If you saved the file then probably you have it in an svg file somewhere, if you exported it to png and closed Inkscape without saving it.. then you can't edit it anymore. Inkscape is for vector images, to edit raster images you should use Gimp.

I just realized I do not know how to do that in GIMP either. I have GIMP but
am not sure how to make it editable.

i would recommend you check a bit google for an explanation about the difference between raster and vector graphics, here is an example:
http://www.signindustry.com/computers/articles/2004-11-30-DASvector_v_raster.php3

your png is a raster image, that means that the only way to modify it (with gimp or photoshop) is by "painting" on it as you would paint on a sheet of paper (this is a super-simplified explanation..). So select a brush or pencil, a color, and paint over it to modify it.

if it was a vector image like svg, then you would be able to select the different shapes you created for your image and modify them individually. changing their shapes, fill or stroke.

So basically.. your png has no layers anymore, it's just a flat picture that you can't edit anymore in inkscape.

i would recommend you to check this video tutorials

for inkscape:
http://screencasters.heathenx.org/

for gimp:
http://meetthegimp.org/

this particular tutorial on meethegimp talks about the difference between vector and raster images, this will help you understanding why you can't edit your png anymore the way you created it.
http://meetthegimp.org/episode-041-is-it-a-hammer/

hope this helps
