Did you make a rectangle behind the image and tried to color it, and got such a error?

No, because that isn't what i need. I have created a gif graphic in ppt and
now I need a vector graphic with a special background. I've already done it
in Inkscape for one time, but I didn’t now who it works - it was just an
hazard. Do you have any ideas?
Thx, Gerald

Yes of course!
I have created a graphic in power point and now i want to import my graphic
in my web-site. For this purpose I need a vector graphic. I was searching in
the web and found Inkscape. Now I copied my power point graphic to Inkscape
and like to modify the background colour close to the colour of my website.
After that I want to export the new graphic as vector graphic.
By the way, Inkscape looks very powerful, and I will use it in the future.
I hope my request is now clear. What I need is some tips how can I handle my
request?

Thx Gerald

Is this graphic you imported into inkscape in vector or bitmap format? If not in vector try to export wmf from powerpoint (not sure how to do this). Also printing to PDF and importing may help to get vector into inkscape.
When vector imported select your background element (double-click to enter groups) and change the color. If no background object present create one. There is no such a thing as "a background color", this is achieved by rectangle in back.

But actually it is still confusing, what you want to achieve and if you are really sure what you are talking about. Vector graphics is nowadays still rarely used on web, as only web-supported formats are SWF (flash), SVG and somewhat WMF. Every other web format (JPG, GIF, PNG and others) is bitmap or raster format.
Sometimes clipart-like images are also referred to as vector format, but this depends on the file format, not the way these were created.
To confuse things a little more up, most vector format images can also have embedded bitmap images, so an SVG may also be as container to JPG picture, for example.
