Copyig an object having a gradient applied to its fill

Asked by David Hodgson

I want to duplicate an object several times and arrange the copies within the page boundary, to be printed and separated as entry tickets.

If I apply a gradient to the background fill, then move the object or copy and paste it to a different position on the worksheet, the gradient still operates from its original position, although the gradient handles and the line between them are invisible. and its affect extends across the whole worksheet.

For instance if I create a rectangle filled with red at the left side graded to white on the right, the further I move or copy it to the right the whiter the fill becomes. Whereas positioning it further to the left changes its fill to denser red.

It is as though the gradient is applied across the whole worksheet on a different level, although I can't find any reference to such.

Is it a bug - or am I missing something? I am at elementary level with Inkscape (v.091pre4 r13712) but have trawled through the "Can of Soup" example!

Hi David,

the last four buttons in the Selection Tool's tool control bar control this kind of behaviour:

Thanks Maren, but I still can't achieve identical copies. I'll have to
abandon Inkscape and use another programme.

Regards
David

Still cannot produce straightforward copies. Have abandoned Inkscape

I have solved this.

Use File/Export PNG Image to export the object to a .PNG file, then import it back.

Laughably simple !

So now you haven't created a duplicate, but a bitmap copy (which can not be edited anymore).
This can be achieved more easily by selecting the object, then going to Edit -> Bitmap Copy.

Tbh., though, I don't believe that this is what you wanted as a result.

Please enable all the four buttons I told you about, then select all the objects that you want to duplicate/copy, hit Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+V at the place where you want to put the copy. This will not move any gradients in any Inkscape version that I know, and on any operating system that Inkscape can be installed one (which ones are yours?)

You can also duplicate an object, by hitting Ctrl+D. In that case, the duplicate will be placed exactly above the original, and you may have to drag it a bit, to see there are actually two objects now.

Also keep in mind that 0.91pre4 is a prerelease version for the pre-previous version, so it's outdated and not deemed a stable version. If you want to use a stable version, you can switch to 0.92.1. Any version with a 'pre' in its name is not stable.

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Thank you for taking the trouble to explain all that. I have tried all of it
and was successful.
I will also install version 0.90.1.

David
PS - I can't put this reply on "Ubuntu One" because it won't accept my email
address or password, even though I registered before opening this thread.
