fill and strokes are N/A

I'm running Inkscape on Vista.
When I try to draw shapes (stars, circles, polygons, rectangles) I can't see the shapes themselves (neither fill nor contour), only the handles.
Also I can't see the lines drawn by the calligraphy tool. The freehand and Bezier tools work fine.
I've played around with the contour and fill settings, but nothing appears, just the handles.
I used to run Inkscape on XP and never encountered this problem.
What am I missing?

Are you sure the opacity isn't set to 0 (or close to 0)? (It's the slider at the bottom in the Fill and Stroke dialog.)

If that's not the problem, then you could always delete your Inkscape preferences file (preferences.xml). This will reset your Inkscape preferences, and should set things back to normal. See my instructions here: https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/36213 . (Those instructions are for Windows XP - preferences.xml may be in a different location on Vista.)

I can't find that file in Vista. I've looked in the inkscape file and it's not there. Does anyone know where it is in Vista?

the manual but no use.When I draw One rectangle and try to draw another one but it disappears the first one...totally inconsistant shapes.

Actually i wanted to draw the squares for keypad design but its not working.let me know someone has correctly worked out on vista.Tool is good but this simple problem then its not good compare to Gimp.

If anyone has solution plz tell me.

I am running windows xp downloaded transport shapes and can't find them to put on mat.
