On DISPLAY MODE/NORMAL I can't draw shapes as I used to do

Asked by blinky

Hello, On DISPLAY MODE/NORMAL I can't draw shapes as I used to do. I get 2 dots and a circle in all shapes. After going to EFFECTS/GENERATE ALONG PATH/APPLY I have this problem. I can't EDIT/UNDO HISTORY nothing gets deleted. Can't select shapes. Nothing happens. Thanks for all your kind help. I'm a beginner too and love INKSCAPE. Blinky.

Hello again, more information for you. When I place my cursor on top of the circle nothing happens but "sometimes" with a rectangle I get the four little arrows and can drag the shape. The star comes in the shape of a polygon but can be corrected. At the moment my circles don't have the four arrows to drag it along. My shapes in VIEW/NORMAL MODE draws me a dotted square with these two tiny squares and a circle. LAST INFORMATION. I'm on OUTLINE MODE, drew a CIRCLE and ELLIPSE. Impossible to select both, nothing happens. If this is of help to you.
Thanks for your kind help. Blinky.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but you can probably fix it by deleting your preferences.xml file (which will reset your Inkscape preferences). If you're using Windows XP then preferences.xml should be in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Inkscape (where <username> is your Windows user name). Close Inkscape before deleting preferences.xml, otherwise deleting it won't have any effect.

I can't find this file. I'm running on vista home premium. Where is the preferences.xml in VHP? Thanks for your help. Also for some reason I can only not see circles and ther is a black line going up the middle of the circle. What's doing that? If I can find the file it won't matter. Also what about a reinstall? Thanks again.

Hey I know this post is quite old but it pointed me in the right direction. For those trying to find this file in vista and windows 7 it is located here: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\inkscape
