Non-lining figures (a.k.a. text figures)

Asked by Warren Young

The numerals in the font I'm using in an Inkscape text block appear quite spaced out, since apparently Inkscape chooses to use the lining numeral spacing. Is there a way to make it use the non-lining forms, so that the numerals kern properly?

I should add that this is in a document imported from Illustrator which did have the non-lining numerals property set for the text, but when I imported it, the fonts were substituted improperly. I had to retype the text.

Lacking this feature, I've had to manually adjust the tracking between each numeral pair, which is rather tedious, especially since it appears that you cannot select a block of text and adjust the tracking for all letters at once.

I forgot to link to this Wikipedia article, in case you don't know what I mean by "lining numerals":

Hi Warren,

I think this problem could have been solved for the next Inkscape version, which supports both kinds of numbers as a setting, if the font offers OpenType support for those.

Please see this blog post from the developer Tavmjong Bah for more info:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/blog/?p=1442

Can you confirm that this is indeed what you mean?

A preview version of Inkscape 0.92 can be downloaded from https://inkscape.org/en/download/development-versions/.
The release notes draft is available here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.92#Font_Features

Note that documents created with 0.91 have a size difference of 90/96 in Inkscape 0.92pre, and that the line spacing appears to be quite broken in the available preview version.

Kind Regards,
 Maren

When is there going to be a fix to the line spacing in 0.92? This is critical to my work.

@C.Spengler: Please don't reuse old, only partially related questions for new issues. This makes it difficult for others to find an answer, if they have the same question.

As for the requested information, please see my answer to your other question here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/288673

and the info about the pre0 prerelease here:
https://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/message/35624555/

Hope this helps, else please open a new question which describes the exact issue that you have, and also includes a link to a file, so we can try to find a step-by-step workaround.

Kind Regards,
 Maren
