Mac OS 10: New Fonts not appearing in Inkscape font list

Asked by BobSongs

System: MacBook Pro, Core Duo, 2 Gb RAM, O/S 10.4.11
Inkscape version: 0.46, Apr 6, 2008

PROBLEM:
A newly installed font on a MacBook Pro does not appear in Inkscape 0.46.
The font installed was a TTF file.
The Font Book (Mac application) says it is a valid TTF font correctly installed.

RESEARCH:
wiki.inkscape.org says concerning fonts and version 0.46:

"This issue is fixed in version 0.46." Now upon further investigation it became clear that newly installed fonts are placed in [User] > Library > Fonts"

FACT:
This DOES allow a font to appear in a *single user's applications*. However, Inkscape on a Mac does not use those fonts.

SOLUTION:
Copy any font that is in

   [User] > Library > Fonts

to

MacBook Pro > Library > Fonts

and restart Inkscape. Or, for the more Unix/Linux minded:

from:
   /Users/[name]/Library/Fonts
to
   /Library/Fonts

First: your English is fine.

Second: we have the same machine. So here is what you do.

Start "Finder".

From the menu bar click "Go", then "Home". (Forgive me for not knowing what the Italian version would be.

In the "Home" folder double-click the "Library" folder.

In the "Library" folder, double-click the "Fonts" folder. You should now see all your personal fonts that were added since you first used your Mac.

From the menu bar click "Edit", then "Select All".

From the menu bar click "Edit", then "Copy..."

From the menu bar click "Go", then "Computer".

Double-click "MacBook Pro".

Double-click "Library".

Double-click "Fonts".

From the menu bar click "Edit", then "Paste".

Restart your SVG software (Inkscape) and your fonts will be fine.

My pleasure, Gianni.

It was funny how I found the answer as I was trying to explain what the problem was.

The Mac has two (or more, depending on the number of users) Fonts folders. Just ensure all installed fonts are in the main Fonts folder.

because of your skilled experience on mac and inkscape, i try to exploite them, just once more:
all my sgv file has been built with illustrator cs (.ia), before my IBM's death; i'm tryng to reuse and modify them with inkscape, on the new mac: what's the simplest way to import them correctly, and be able to upload on inkscape as svg files, and not just as a simple graphic image; or i have to use the functionalities of inkscape after have imported them?

sorry
hoping to give back your technical favors, i'm just a graphic sw fan, instead my professional skills are strong as Concept, Analysis and Project Manager;
so if you need, in this fields, without knowledge about your work, i'll be very happy to give answer to a question of yours.
best regards

My use of Inkscape is done primarily on Mac OS X 10.4, or in Ubuntu's GNU/Linux. For more assistance on how to install fonts to have them show up correctly in Windows or in Vista, please consult a Windows or Vista forum as well as the very helpful inkscapeforum.com forum.

My PC runs GNU/Linux (Ubuntu, Hardy Heron 8.04) and Windows XP Pro. I've decided that from Windows 3.0 until Windows XP the ride was bumpy but tolerable. With Vista? You're on your own.
