problem with printing text in inkscape

Asked by Brenda Savoy

I am trying to print text. The document is all text no images. I have 2 layers one is the typed text and one is a layer for decorated text. I go to print, select the paper size etc and then check print preview. On the preview the background is black or the text can barely be seen as a lighter image on the black background. I want the background to be white or clear and the text to be the fill color I have chosen. Help!

Hi Brenda,

the black printing is most probably a known bug in Inkscape 0.91, 64bit Windows version.

It is caused by an object in your drawing being (partially) transparent.

You can work around it by:
- exporting to PNG, then print that image from another program
- putting a white rectangle at the bottom of your drawing, which is at least as big as your drawing
- eliminating all transparencies in your drawing (no blur, no opacity < 100%, no alpha < 100%)
- using Inkscape 0.91 32bit version

Also see the release notes for the current Inkscape version:

Kind Regards,

As you no doubt can tell I do not really understand much of the way in which inkscape works. The terminology, how to set up or use it. I am trying to combine text and graphics on one page and need to keep it to an 8.5 x 11.00 page size to print. I have made sure that there are no transparency and have accomplished  that but now when I go to print it is not black bit the text shows as blocks not letters. I also exported as a png  document and the whole document doesn't show when I open it in ms picture editor. Not sure how else to open it. I greatly appreciate your help. I have downloaded parts of the manual to use but am still not understanding some things.

Mmh, that sounds annoying, Brenda :/

Can you upload the files (svg + png) and a few screenshots, and maybe a photo of the printout somewhere?

(not here, attachments will not work, unfortunately. Instead please use google drive, dropbox, framadrop or some other online file hosting service, and post the link here in a comment).

Kind Regards,
 Maren
