I have difficulty in using the eraser to cut out a section of an object. When I try to use the tool, it will only remove a complete object, not a part of an object. Please help.

Asked by Hugh

I am trying, without success, to remove part of an object by using the eraser tool. I click on the eraser tool and the mode "cut out from objects" but the result is always that the complete object is removed, rather than just a part.

Can you help me please?

Regards

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

this is interesting - the eraser tool has a few known bugs in Inkscape 0.91, but I never heard about this one.

So:
- which Inkscape version are you using?
- which operating system are you using?

Can you make a screenshot of the settings of your tool, give us an exact step-by-step description of what you do and upload both the screenshot and the file that shows the problem for you to some online file hoster? (no attachments supported, please paste the links to the files)?

Kind Regards,
 Maraen

Hi Maraen,

Thank you for your response. I am a novice user of Inkscape, so there is probably a simple answer to my problem. I am using version 0.91 with Windows 10.

See also the link Inkscape Query (file://LAPTOP-P5A4UPEK/Users/hughh/OneDrive/Pictures/Inkscape%20Query)

Since my first note to you, I think I may have resolved my problem, as follows:

Firstly, I attach the original svg document, "Pic26.svg"
Then I attach a screen shot just before deleting the number 26 in bottom right side
Then I stroke the number 26 with red fill stroke
Then I change the red colour to white by dragging the white colour from the palet over the 26.

See also the link (file://LAPTOP-P5A4UPEK/Users/hughh/OneDrive/Pictures/Inkscape%20Query)

Is this the correct approach? If so, could you advise how I should change the default fill stroke from red to white?

Kind Regards,

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

lol, I mistyped my name yesterday... too tired... It's Maren.

The links you posted are links to files that sit on your computer's hard disk, so I cannot access them. Please upload all the requested files to a file hoster, like google drive, dropbox or https://framadrop.org (this last one does not require an account) and post the links you get from the file hosting service.

Could you maybe also add a hint about the end result you want to achieve? Maybe there's a better option than using the eraser, but I can only tell when I know what you want to do.

For changing the color of an object, there are about 10 different options how to do that in Inkscape. Here's the corresponding part of a tutorial I've written about this:
http://vektorrascheln.de/posts/2015/Dec/inkscape-fuer-einsteiger-teil-ii-praxis-en.html#changing-colors-editing-stroke-and-fill

and this is the corresponding manual section:

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Maren,

I have chosen Dropbox. Framadrop looks good, but I'll have to study up on my French before I can use it.
I send a typical sketch of a road intersection. I have sent the link to Hachmann <email address hidden>. Please confirm that you have received it.

I am managing a local "fun run" in Sydney (Australia) each year and I need to make some adjustments to the intersection diagrams. There are about 30 different diagrams in total.

I believe that you will already have received the screen captures showing where I have tried to make changes. If not I will send them again.

Merci boucoup,

Hugh

Can't confirm :/ You'd need to make the link public here in the answers section.
