importing from scanner

is there any way to import pictures from a scanner into inkscape to then use in scal ?
If there is can you explain in 'idiot' language please lol I have a lovely picture of a haunted house I'd like to try and cut.

import the bitmap that comes from your scanner into inkscape... (drag n drop
from a file browser should work) or (file > import)

then you will have to trace the bitmap to convert it into vector format.
(path > trace bitmap). This is where it gets a bit tricky and all depends on
the source image...
The Tutorial in help > tutorials > tracing should help, but it is a bit
outdated as the screenshots do not match the interface of the 0.46 tracing
dialog.
