Selecting Tools + pen pad = sluggish response

Asked by Tom

Very happy with Program. Long time use. Restaurant menus ~ Ok using a mouse or central button as mouse - but very slow - and finally got sore finger (!) - so got a Wacom "Bamboo" pad 2 days ago - Set it to basic mouse mode - Now select a tool and sometimes responds - sometimes not. - Re-installed Inkscape ('Repaired' it) - same result.

When I put the pointer on the text symbol, for example - nothing happens - sometimes the little note comes out - 'Add text' -
IF I move the pointer over this 'Add text' - THEN the pointer changes to an "A" (as usual). (But sometimes I am not fast enough! - It is hide & seek.

Also another e.g. When in text mode, i point to the text size window, nothing happens - yet with the button, the list of sizes appears.

The words at the very top - 'File - Edit - View - etc - No problem. - Nor the next row - the symbols for 'Save' - 'Export' etc -
Correction - 2nd row not responsive

Inkscape OK - Pointer OK - (But they do not like each other at the moment) ! Re-install Inkscape from the web again?

Used a 'Trust' Flexi Pen Pad before - but it kept going wrong. Much faster than a normal mouse - or the button - Could wizz about the screen!

OS is Win7 - 32 bit. - 60% free disk space - 1.5 ram. - Dell Latitude D 420 -

Please help. I need it for work -

Thank you
Tom

Hi Tom,

there are many different reasons why Inkscape can be slow, some are bugs, and some are just limitations due to the file structure and the computer you are using.

See http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=12160 for tips about how to improve general performance.

In Inkscape 0.91, there's a problem with documents that contain a lot of text causing a massive slowdown. Converting text to path seems to help (but looses editability). Remember that Inkscape is not a desktop publishing software, so maybe for creating long menues with multiple pages and lots of text, it's recommendable to use an appropriate tool, like Scribus (http://scribus.net/).

Then there's also a problem with the rulers in some cases, see http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.91#Known_issues . Hiding them can improve performance with some graphics cards.

If these hints don't help:

For the specific driver settings of your graphics tablet: Did you try out modifying them?

As I am not a Windows user, nor a graphics tablet expert:
Please look through this list of known bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape?field.searchtext=wacom+bamboo&search=Search&field.status%3Alist=NEW&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSE&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITHOUT_RESPONSE&field.status%3Alist=CONFIRMED&field.status%3Alist=TRIAGED&field.status%3Alist=INPROGRESS&field.status%3Alist=FIXCOMMITTED&field.assignee=&field.bug_reporter=&field.omit_dupes=on&field.has_patch=&field.has_no_package=

and compare them to your problem to see if it is already known to the developers. Else you might need to open a new bug report.

Kind regards,
 Maren

Thank you for your feedback
a) Big menus have never been a problem( Google > signartsite2 )some up to 160 cm deep!
b) Never use the rulers, but will hide as you suggest
c) Inkscape manual (tavmjong) suggests 'Disable' on the pen-pad - Have done that
d) 'Trust' pen was ok with Inkscape - But that was ausb version - This one is a wireless version - so maybe - maybe that's it (?) If I could be certain, I would buy that version.
 Will sift through your links
Thanks again
Regards
