Asked by Kyle Raley

when saving files as a svg file everything works perfectly. When finalized and saving as a dxf file for cutting the file is blank. You open the document and there is no contents. Is this a bug issue?

Hi Kyle,

yes, this may be a bug, depending on the contents of your dxf / svg files.

Which Inkscape version do you use? Which operating system do you use? How do you save to dxf?
Can you upload both files somewhere, so we can look? (don't use mail attachments, they will not work. Use a file hosting service instead.)

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Kyle,

a file hosting service is something like dropbox or google drive or framadrop where you can upload a file and then share the link to the file with others.

If you're not using google or dropbox, you can try here: http://framadrop.org/

Which operating system do you use? Windows? OS X? Linux? Which version? 32bit or 64bit?

Kind regards,
 Maren

You'll need to share this publicly - if I don't know how to help you, someone else may, but they only can when they have access to the file.

Hi Kyle,

to get this to work (or at least, to get a dxf file that has contents that can be found when opening with Inkscape), open the SVG.

Now, put the contents into the page area, so it's easier to find:
Group all objects. Place them on the page (either by resizing page to contents in the document properties, or by moving the contents onto the page (zoom out to find the page).

Next: unlink the symbols (for some weird reason, all objects are symbols).
Ungroup the group. Keep everything selected. Look into the status line. Does it say something with 'symbol'? If so, go to Edit -> Clone -> Unlink clone.

Repeat the process until no symbols are present in the file anymore. (Ungrouping 3 times, if you have grouped in the first step)

Now save a copy to dxf.

I don't know how well that file will cut, as its elements all consist of many, many unconnected lines, which is weird - but maybe it's how it belongs, no idea. I never used such a file for cutting/plotting/younameit, and never even used a cutter/plotter/...

Kind regards,
 Maren
