Change the tool bar to contain my favoritesb bunch shapes into one icon.

Asked by ros

I want to change the toolbar to contain my favorites. By bunching the star & rectangle shapes into one icon etc the eraser icon could appear in the toolbar without my having to use smaller icons or needing the double arrows at the bottom to get it. It would make life easier.

Hi ros,

a feature request to allow customized toolbars is being tracked here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/414372

Using some kind of 'shape' button that has a submenu when you click on it that shows the different shape tools (circle, rectangle, star, maybe 3Dbox) has been discussed on the development mailing list some time ago. I don't know what became of it, though.

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,
So this problem was noted in 2009 and still no fix is available now end
of Jan 2016! This is disappointing! If inkscape need another software
engineer - I can recommend a good one. But anyway thanks for your reply
Maren and I'll continue to struggle on.

Hi Ros,

we are *always* happy to welcome new volunteers - the more qualified people help us, the better.

If you know someone who would like to spend some of their free time on a worthy project in a friendly, collaborative community with many chances to learn something new, then direct them to the developer mailing list or the developer irc channel.

Hi Maren
I spoke to both programmers, my son and husband, but unfortunately they
are not rushing into action on this.
I'll keep trying.

This is John.
I toil away at organising software for my artist wife to use!
So maybe we can help each other with Inkscape projects.
Cheers
John

Hi John - welcome!

For a first contact, I'd advise you to join the developers' mailing list and to inquire in the developer chat channel:
See https://inkscape.org/en/community/mailing-lists/
and
https://inkscape.org/en/community/discussion/ (at the bottom)

The configurability of the user interface seems to depend on moving from GTK2 to GTK3, AFAIU (not being a developer). So if this is your goal, to help your wife (and many, many other users - I'd like to be able to throw out unused things, too), this is the area you'll need to familiarize yourself with. For the rest, please discuss with the actual devs ;-)

Kind regards,
 Maren
