isolating image from stock JPG download

Asked by pat

I'm new to graphic editing and Inkscape.
I am trying to creat ea logo with an element that is part of a non-copyrighted JPG that I downloaded.
How can I 'outline' the object and select it out of the JPG and save as a transparent PNG object file?

Hi Pat,

what you're looking for is a bitmap graphics editor program, if this is the only thing you want to do.

Inkscape is vector graphics editing software.

Bitmap graphics are those images that consist of *colored dots*, like jpg, png, bmp,...
Vector graphics are images that consist of curves, nodes, all parts of *objects*, which can have a fill and / or a stroke, like svg.

That said, you can still use Inkscape to do what you want, but it might be a little more cumbersome than if you used a program that was *made* for this kind of task.
Find a tutorial here: http://goinkscape.com/how-to-crop-an-image-in-inkscape/

If you want to try a decent, free and open source bitmap graphics editor, take a look at the GIMP: http://gimp.org

Kind regards,
 Maren

Thanks very much Maren, I will try GIMP instead, although I have spent a bit of time since I posted learning abou tracing.. it seems to be the right knob to use!
Cheers,

Tracing is cool, too, if you goal is to have a vectorized, scalable version of the image (depends upon what it is: a logo: Great! a photo: Not great!).

Tutorials can be found inside Inkscape (Help -> Tutorials -> Tracing) and here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html and here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ATracingExample.html
