changing text to outlines, downloading fonts

Asked by John Redman

Concerning fonts, I downloaded several Irish fonts but do not find them in my list of fonts in Inkscape although I did a spiral truetype font that DID make it in. Any advice?

Other question about fonts has to do with changing text words to outlines of the letters. I'm sending the graphics to a laser engraver to cut through graphics paper and see no reason for the laser to engrave away the entire inside part of the letter. Time wasting at the least. BTW, I am a complete neophyte at this. Early in this project, I somehow, accidentally, DID achieve the desired result but have no idea how, just ended up "knowing" that it is possible. Does not work with View-Display Mode-Toggle. Thanks.

Hi John,

About the fonts:
it may be necessary to reboot the computer (or to refresh the font cache, if you know how to do that) before newly installed fonts are visible. If the fonts are still not there after a reboot, please indicate a link to a font that does not work, so this can be tested (and tell us about your operating system, Inkscape version, Inkscape file you downloaded).

About the engraving:
The display mode only influences how things are displayed, so no, that's not the way to go.

The rest depends on what your engraver wants to see. Some require certain layers, some require a certain stroke color, it might be that you only need to remove the fill and add a stroke instead - I can't say.

Look into your engraver's manual / the description for the software you use for engraving / the format your engraver wants to read to find out.

Kind regards,
 Maren

(and maybe you're interested in the Hershey fonts: Extensions -> Render -> Hershey text and the 'Object to Path' feature, which converts regular, editable text into paths, see http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Creating.html (bottom, search for 'Object to Path').

Dear Maren,
I have rebooted the computer dozens of times since downloading the Irish fonts. I was guessing that it is because they are not Truetype as is the Spiral font package (which was present instantly). As for the software for operating the laser engraver, I am out on a limb with that, too, The instructions say that when I finish unpacking it I will see a "308 Engineering" extension that takes a vector drawing and proportionally sizes it to my application. I have downloaded that 6 times in Win 7 and Linux Mint and never seen the "308 Engineering" extension. The instruction includes screenshots, so, there is no doubt what to look for. The seller of it is Banggood and there customer service leaves everything to be desired. FI, just yesterday I called them out on a bicycle saddle that they claimed was ALL carbon fiber. The pictures showed that it was ZERO carbon fiber and I went through 2 rounds with customer service before they changed the product description. They replied with lies. That was weeks after I started with them about why I don't find "308 Engineering". No satisfaction yet. The software for controlling it is either Grbl (which has a lot of instruction but none on "308") or Benbox which has none in English. I don't consider the Irish fonts vital as I used Georgia and I like the look of that. Thanks for being an angel.

Might be - I cannot say without seeing a font file or you telling me its name. We are not mind-readers here ;)

I hope you will understand that I also cannot give support for an engraver I neither own, nor have ever heard of, nor even know the name of.

You might want to join one of the maker / engraving forums, though, they might be able to help you with your specific setup, if you're lucky.

One of those is http://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/ , and http://inkscapeforum.com has a subforum for this - but there are quite a few more of those, where the makers / cutting/plotting people hang out.

Kind regards and a happy new year despite all those adversities,
 Maren

Stonecross, Meath and Celtic_Hand but I've so many hours invested using Georgia for "Erin Go Bragh, Eirinn go Brach, and FAUGH A BALLAGH on a banner under an Irish Harp that I will not go back and change it.

If you would like to see, I'll send one in PDF to you.
I certainly was not asking for help with Grbl.

I have hundreds of hours invested in the Irish Harp, having started with 2 items for sale on eBay and NOT knowing about the trace part of Inkscape. I replaced all the Cntrl F6 lines I traced laboriously with Shift F6 lines and blew them up sometimes to 5,000% size to tack ends together while in Cntrl 5. I found and figured several ways to tilt letters to follow the curves of the banner. These 3 will be blown up to about 10 X 12 inches and placed on the hood, roof and tailgate of a Nissan truck that I have in the body shop right now. A small version of Move It Forward (the 3rd) will be burned into a leather Selle San Marco Girardi bicycle seat that I have prepared with green and orange outside stripes on a white existing cover.

Your help is most appreciated.

It worked. I converted text to paths but did not see the result until I toggled the view. I did not bother with the making of circles as the letter"O"s that I had will do. I have learned much and appreciate the lessons
