background color outside canvas

Hhmm, I'm not sure what you mean, since I've never used Illustrator. The entire area where you can draw, in Inkscape, is the canvas. So there's no such place as outside the canvas, in Inkscape. But assuming you mean outside the page border, yes you can change the color.

File menu > Document Properties > Page tab > Background color

Note that the Inkscape canvas is transparent by default (yes, without any checkerboard pattern to indicate). So you will need to make it opaque, which you can do from the same little window that opens when you click on the color bar in Doc Prop dialog.

I hope that works for you. But if I have misunderstood, please clarify, and we'll try again :-)

I think he means themes, but I couldn't work out how to change it, without changing my system's theme.

Yes. Something like gimp theme. Just so using inkscape will be easier on the eyes. :)

If we could only change color of the background outside of the canvas and not -- at the same time -- inside the canvas would be amazing. Or something close to a theme really.

Search for "Inkscape", "GTK2" and "Theme", and you will get some results, especially at inkscapeforum.com (for example: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=4855 ) There's also a youtube video linked from here: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15401 - but those are all for Windows.

Unfortunately, those forum posts are quite old, and a few of the links are dead now.
I wasn't able to find out how to make it work, but you might :)

Hi Maren, how do you do?

I'd love to contribute more and more to this Project. I love inkscape and
use it on Windows since version 0.32. :)

Translating a section of the site made me proud but it is very time
consuming! hehe.

If you think I could collaborate let me know. Little bit busy (who isn't?
:) ) learning python, htm5 and css.

I was amazed to realize that an Udemy course (animaions using SVG and CSS3)
worked with Inkscape (you just need to save SVG as Optimized files and it
Works!)
