Line drawing of rectangles using inches

Asked by Janet Fullerton

I need to be able to create rectangles and squares without filling in with color and outlined in black that prints only the outlines. How do I do it? I am trying to make patterns for quilting with paper foundation method. All I need is to be able to use the rectangle tool and have whatever I do outlined in black. I need this answered in steps so I know which button to click on. Thanks so much!

Hi Janet,

So this is for making rectangles with black outlines with Inkscape 0.91:

1. Open Inkscape ;)
2. Click on the rectangle tool button on the left side of the screen (or hit F4)
3. Click+Drag to create a rectangle on the canvas
4. Open the Fill & Stroke dialog, either by Ctrl+Shift+F, or by clicking on the icon with the paintbrush in the top icon row.
5. In the first tab, Fill, set the fill by clicking on the X (no fill)
6. In the second tab, Stroke, set the stroke color to black (either enter 000000ff in the little textbox with the label RGBA, or drag the sliders to get black.
7. In the third tab, Stroke Style, set the width of the stroke.

If you want to use inches as units for everything, it may be wise to set that first.
Go to File -> Document Properties -> First tab, topmost selection box: Default Units: set to 'in'

If you ever decide you want to use Inkscape for more, or just explore what you can do with it, you can take a look into the tutorials that come with it (Help -> Tutorials) for an introduction ;)

Happy quilting!

Regards,
 Maren
