Make a shape to use for shading

Asked by SR

Now I have another question in conjunction with "How to draw an adorable elephant in Inkscape". Under the headline "Doing some Shading", step 2-3. I still use Windows 7. I have made the 2 shapes and selected both, then headed up to Path > Difference. The lock in the top menu (between With and Hight) is closed. When I press on Difference nothing is happening. How di I get the crescent moon-shape?

Regards
SR

Hi Siv,

are the two shapes lying directly on top of one another? Is one of them bigger than the other? Is the bigger one at the bottom?

What does it say in the status bar at the bottom of the window, directly below the canvas when you try 'Path -> Difference'?

And when you select them one by one, and look into the text in the status bar (at the bottom), are they both 'Paths'?

You might also want to look into one of our tutorials. They are even (partially) translated to Norwegian, and they can be very helpful to understand the concepts behind vector pictures. Look into Hjelp -> Innföringar -> Det Grunnleggjande, and also into Avansert (for the Path operations, like Difference).

Kind regards,
 Maren

The two shapes lying directly on top of one another. One is bigger than the other one. The smaller one is at the bottom.
In the statusbar it stood Group of 1 object on both object, so I had to ungroup the object and then could make the moon-shape. Thank you for help.
