I've traced an jpeg file and wish to save as an eps file. When I go to save as, there is no option for saving as an eps file. What am I missing?

Asked by sandy

I'm trying to save a jpeg file as an eps file. I've traced the bitmap and when I go to save as, there is no option for saving as an eps file. What am I doing wrong?

When I click save as, it prompts me to select file to save to. It is then
saved as a SVG file. I need it as an eps file.

In the 'save as' dialog, at the bottom, I have a dropdown which allows to save to different formats, eps is among them - but I'm on Linux, not on Win or Mac, - and I already have everything installed I need for printing and pdf support, including ghostscript.

I believe that the different file format options in this dropdown depend on the software you have installed on your computer (other than Inkscape).

It is possible that you need to install ghostscript in addition to Inkscape to make this work.
Here is the link to the corresponding section in Inkscape's FAQ:

Ghostscript is only needed to _open_ EPS/PS files, but not for saving (a copy) as PostScript file (EPS or PS).

Thanks, suv, that was what I wasn't sure about.

So Sandy, what happens if you just enter 'filename.eps' when trying to save? And is there really no dropdown to choose the file format in your save-as dialog?

JFTR - the full name of the EPS file format in the dropdown list of available output file formats in the 'Save as' dialog is
 "Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps)"
