How can I erase part of an object?

How can I make a hole in an object? I especially want to create a circlular hole in a square, so that my imagery can be seen through/within the circle.

I also wish to remove parts of other objects.

draw your circle on top of your square, select both and do path-> difference ( http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Combining.html )
