How to add clip-art as a layer

"Clip art hex grid" That description makes it sound like it's an image, such as GIF or JPG. If that's the case, simply open the layer where you want it, and import the image. Of course, it will be an object. There's no way around that. Imported images can only be objects.

Depending on the quality of that image (still assuming that's what you mean) you might be able to turn it into a vector image. Import, then Path menu > Trace Bitmap. But it still will be an object.

If what you need is a grid which will not be part of the finished image, you can do either one of the above, and then just delete the grid image, when you're finished.

Orrrr, and this might be the best answer, Inkscape actually has an axonomic (isometric) grid which could be used as a hex grid. Just like regular (rectangular) grids, they are fully customizable. See Document Properties > Grids.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm very new to using any graphic art software, and undoubtedly don't even know the terminology well enough to ask a proper question. For example, I’m not sure what the difference is between an image and an object.

The hex grid I'm looking for needs to be a layer on a finished map, I want the land continents to sit on top of the hex grid so that the hex grid only shows up on the water area of the world map. I found a clip art hex grid, but can’t seem to insert it as a true layer. I don’t know enough to be able to tell you if the grid is to be part of the finished image, but I think it should be as the final map product will show the hex grid on the water portions of the world map. Adjusting the size of all of the hexes is important for tweaking, as is being able to move the grid itself around (which I would think you could do with Shift+Control+M).

I did look at the axonomic grid you directed me to, but I’m unsure how to customize that and turn it into a hexagon grid.

Do you mean make a link to the topic that your going to start somewhere?

Copy/paste, not a link. We solve the problem with an email discussion, then you do any edits you want to our emails for the sake of clarity and brevity for the benefit of readers of the forum, then you just copy paste your/our final work to the public forum. Most web sites allow copy/paste actions.

I want to make sure you understand that the problem you've presented may be solved, probably or at least theoretically, in a few different ways. Whatever way I think of may not be necessarily the best way. And others in the forum may know a better way. It sounds like your project may evolve, as we explore options, which makes "keeping options open" more important.

While I have almost 8 years experience with Inkscape, and my knowledge is very strong on the basics, and strong on intermediate skills, I'm pretty weak on advanced skills. And while I could probably get you where you want to be with my set of skills, there are members....I should say members at InkscapeForum.com, who have much more advanced knowledge than me, and may have a much more elegant solution.

So I'm still happy to help you out with this, and look forward to the solving this very interesting problem. But in the end, you still may want to know if there are other approaches, which would be found at InkscapeForum.com.

For example, the 1st question I would ask, before we get started, is do you need this functionality on a webpage? Or does functionality where the grid can be resized and moved relative to the map, need to happen only in Inkscape? If it needs to be on a webpage.....I will very much be inching my way, and learning as I go, and still might not get there. While I know there are members at IF who already know how to do it.

I'm back from 'vacation' (taking an accreditation course all week). To answer your questions, no, the end product will not be used on a webpage (something I hadn't even thought of). I'm not sure by what you mean by "scripting". The end product will be used in a game, but a board game, not an online or computer game. The end product will be a hard copy map printed on large paper at some place like Kinko's.

The reason I'm asking, is because of the requirement that it be scalable.
To be scalable without distortion (as a raster image would be) it will need

to a raster format, but not always.

If it's simply lines, it would be easy to trace "manually" using the
Pen/Bezier tool. Although if it's simply lines, you should be able to use
one of the several kinds of grids that can be drawn with Inkscape extensions
or LPE.

However, if the grid image is stylized, so that it looks 3D or wooden, or
whatever, that will make things much more complicated. Inkscape has a tool

Correct, scalable only during the design phase, final product will be on paper. The hex grid is strictly lines, no style. Not positive if it is clip-art or not, my guess is yes. Any hex grid vector based object you can find is what I’ll use. Attached is my latest product, an Inkscape saved file. If the attached file doesn’t make it, then I’ll try again using the procedure you outlined in your last email.

The snag so far is to be able to select a whole bunch of hexes and scale them all at once, as a separate layer.

Well no, I don't see any file attached to the email or in Answers online.
Since I'm "IT" at the moment, it will save us at least 1 exchange if I go

Meanwhile, I'll look into what kinds of grids Inkscape can draw. I've never

Oh, scaling the hex grid won't be a problem at all. Not unless we run into
something I'm not expecting, lol.
