Have read instructions but having problem scaling print out of SVG image

Asked by M Dennis Farr

I am attempting to print out an SVG image created in Sweet Home 3D. All information tells me the image is scalable, however; I cannot seem to make that happen. I can print, but not to scale. A little clear guidance is appreciated, I am not that computer literate.
Thanks for your help,
Dennis

Well, I don't know anything about "printing to scale". So this may be the blind leading the blind.

But first, is this even about Inkscape?

If you have the image open in Inkscape, you could scale it in Inkscape, to the needed size. And then print.

This part of the manual will tell you how to scale the image: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Transforms.html

Or possibly you need to explain a little more about what you're doing. I'm not too clear.

Or are you trying to print from Home Sweet 3D? If so, maybe try to scale from there, before printing.

Thanks for your prompt reply, and I apologize for my delay in responding.
Yes, a plan view in Sweet Home 3D drawn to 1/4" = 1'0" scale. When
converting it to an SVG image, then opening in Inkscape, the image is not
to that scale, rather much larger.

Yes, in Inkscape, with the SVG document open, I have managed to "scale
down" the image, but only by trial and error. It took 7 generations of
printing to reach the appropriate graphic scale, although it is still not
an exact scale to the image created in SH3D; only a close enough match.
In the tool bar, there seems to be a scale in pixels, which in the pull
down menu offers "in" which I interpret to mean inches. However; there is
no graphic scale indication corresponding to the "inch" scale when dragging
the corner of the bounding box while scaling down.

Remember, my competence in software such as this is non-existent. What may
be quite simple to someone with much technology savvy is quite the opposite
to me. The instructions in the link are of no help in determining the
actual scale.

If I am missing something in what I am reading, your further advice would
be appreciated.
At least I have something now I can work with.
Thanks Again.
Dennis

Well I can't help you in determining the scale either. Without such a feature as printing to scale, the only other way to do it would be to calculate the size needed, and scale to that size. And then print.

You can change the ruler units to inches from File menu > Document Properties > Page tab > Default Units.

Or instead of using the Selection tool to scale the image, try using Object menu > Transform > Scale. That way, you can scale precisely to the size you want -- using any of the units provided (which include percent). The instructions for using the Transform dialog are in the link I provided.

After some thought, I've been wondering if a feature called "print to scale" would be something you'd find on a printer, or in the printer software? Maybe the scaling part of the problem should be handled by the printer?? Although I really have no experience with architecture, and don't know what should be expected. Inkscape isn't architecture software eitiher.

Can you help with this problem?
