Files are saving as html when saving as SVG or JPEG etc

Asked by Cheryl

Hello. All my Inskscape files are saving with as html documents and not as an SVG or JPEG etc. I just purchased a laptop running Windows 8.1. Previously, I used Inkscape on Winows XP and the files always saved as I wanted. Is there a setting I need to change in Inkscape that will prevent files from saving as html files, so they save correctly? So far other programs such as Microsoft Word are saving files correctly on my new laptop.

I also was getting runtime errors while using Inkscape. I had the Windows Operating System reinstalled and it seems to be better. It did have one runtime error after the re-installation, but I was copying and pasting 3 scanned images (300dpi) into one drawing, so I may have overloaded the program that time.

I don't know if the two things are related.

Thank you for your help. :)

Hhmmm....

When you click Save As, type in the name of the file, and don't forget to put .svg on the end. Then make sure to choose Inkscape SVG (or Plain SVG, if you need it) from the Save as Type menu.

I don't know why, but you have to do both.

If you've done that, and it still saves as HTML, reply back again. :-)

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

I tried several times to save a couple of different files as instructed, for example " drawing.svg" and then with the Inkscape SVG setting. But, each time the file still saved as a html file. I opened Micrsosoft Paint and saved a file as .png file and it save correctly.

Is there a setting in Inkscape that I need to change? I have looked, but so far haven't found anything.

Thanks again for the help :-)

Is inkscape your default program to open .svg files, or is it possible that they are "normally" saved and you just open them by default with ie or whatever browser you are using ?

Note that to save drawings so that they can be opened by a raster image editor such as paint, you have to do file-> export png, and not file->save.

Thank you for responding! I am afraid I am not as tech-savvy as yourself. When I use paint I click 'save as' and name the file and it saves as a '.png file'. I can open the same file with Inkscape and when I click 'save as' it saves as an 'html' file that opens an internet page regardless of if it save it as a '.svg, .jpg .png' . All my other documents and files are saving correctly. How do I change the settings to have Inkscape files save correctly and not as a webpage?

Best,

Cheryl

Thank you!

I found a tutorial on how to save default document settings on You Tube, which led me to the following solution.

Here is the YouTube tutorial I watched: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9gN8ld1psc

Here is the path I took to get the files to save in a svg file:

OS (C:) > Program Files > Inkscape > Templates > Default > Right Click on Default > Open With > More Options > Select Inkscape

Now instead of an IE Thumbnail I have an Inkscape Thumbnail (Inkscape Logo). Does anyone know how to adjust the settings so the thumbnail is of the SVG that was saved?

Again Thanks for helping me :-)

This may work :

https://svgextension.codeplex.com/releases/view/118790

(make sure to take the one with 64bits iff you are on a 64b system)

Hi. Thank you for your time in responding!

I tried this link for the 64-bit, but it didn't seem to do anything. I am on Windows 8.1 so maybe it is not compatible or I did something wrong.

Thanks again :)

Wow! This may not be the best place to discuss this. But since the Renesis player went defunct, and Windows started to recognize SVG, I thought Windows would begin to display the SVG image thumbnail in Windows Explorer. It seems odd to me that it doesn't. (I think I'll venture over to MS and put a feature request, if I can figure out how.)

Well, I did notice the above app is in "alpha", which is actually less than beta (which means it's still in early testing stage). So it might not be surprising if it doesn't work.

There may be some place on the internet where you can still get the old Renesis plugin. But whether it would work in Win8, I have no idea. It does work for me in Win7. I'd be glad to send a copy of mine to you, but it's totally unsupported (the creator literally disappered from the internet).

Maybe you could contact the author of that "SVG Viewer Extension for Windows Explorer" and ask them for help?

Otherwise, and I know this is less than ideal, you could just use Inkscape for your file manager, for SVG files. i.e. File menu > Open. Then when you click on a file, Inkscape gives you a preview.
