SVG file compatiblity issue.

Asked by Michel Bouchet

I am rather new to Inkscape and therefore might not yet know about some basic concepts.
I am having problems opening an svg file that I downloaded from wikipedia.
Is there something I could do about it?

The file is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Italian_regions_white_%28with_new_provinces%29.svg
When I try to open it I get the message:
Failed to load the requested file .....

I tried using Inkscape 0.48 on Mac and also using 0.47 on Debian linux.

And of course I did that after downloading the file to my computer.

And I have the same problems with some other svg files too.

I'm thinking you're trying to open the file directly from Wikipedia, You first need to save the SVG onto your desktop or wherever you want to save it, and then try to right click on open it with Inkscape.

I just downloaded that SVG myself and I had no problems opening it at all in Inkscape.

Windows 7 x64
Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939

Have you tried to delete and let Inkscape recreate your preference files? I'm just guessing here since I don't own a Mac, or have a separate Linux install on my computer. Also, have you been able to install 0.48.4 on your Mac to see if that works (same with your Linux distro)?

Make sure that you download & save the actual SVG file (instead e.g. the HTML file), and save it as SVG file (file type) in the browser (e.g. Firefox), not as web page or e.g. TXT file. You can also open the downloaded file(s) which fail to open in Inkscape in a plain-text editor, to verify the content (you might have saved the HTML page instead of the SVG file). Secondly the console messages would give a hint _why_ exactly Inkscape can't load those files…

Note: both mentioned SVG files open without failure in Inkscape 0.48.2 for Mac OS X (official package), as well as in Inkscape 0.48.4 (local build), and current trunk builds - all tested on OS X 10.7 Lion.

@rickmastfan67 - the latest currently available precompiled package for Mac OS X is Inkscape 0.48.2 (newer packages are work-in-progress, but not yet ready).

(one can compile & install newer versions e.g. via MacPorts, but that's not an easy task unless one is already familiar with Macports and uses it to install other ported software)
