Is there a way, from the Inkscape interface, to see the size (in bytes) of the svg file?

Asked by Gregor Shapiro

I want to see the size (bytes) of the file I am working on. Can I do this in the Inkscape interface? I expected to find this information under File > Document properties but did not. i see the size in pixels or mm or lots of other units but that is not the same thing.

I'm not aware of any drawing program that will show the size of the file you're working on. This is because when you're working on the file, it's in a "raw" state and any size displayed will be erroneous as to the final saved file size. What is important is that you're not exceeding the amount of memory you have.

I have a bitmap program that calculates prior to a save, Even Inkscape could display the size of the previously saved version or a guesstimate of the present file size,

I guess this should be turned into a feature request.

Do you need help filing a feature request for this, or do you know how to do that?

I am not sure how to properly submit a feature request. Could you point me
to a guide?
Thanks

Sorry about the delay. See http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Feature_Requests. Please reply again if you have further questions about how to file an upstream feature request in Inkscape.

Eliah-
OK you gave me a link to a "Feature Notepad". I created a login, now what? I
cannot see any way to add to the notepad...
Are these full fledged feature requests or just a place to keep some ideas?
What is "upstream" and is there a "downstream"?
/Gregor

Submitting a feature request:

You just file a regular "bug report" even if you want to request a new feature - a member of the bug team will set bug importance to 'Wishlist' later, and triage your proposal as it does with normal bug reports.

You can also convert a question to a bug report instead of filing a new one - this will convert the question and IIRC all its comments/answers in the answer section to a bug report which then will be triaged accordingly (as bug report or feature request, depending on the issue) by the bug team.

There are also blueprints (another tool offered by launchpad), but you should only use it if you provide a detailed specification for the implementation of your proposed feature, and possibly intend to work on the code as well.

On the upper-left corner of the page, it says Inkscape Wiki. Under that, it says Views. In the list of items under Views, one of them is called Edit. You use that one to edit the page. When editing the page, make sure not to delete content created by others. Since the syntax is the same as Wikipedia's, I'm guessing that, to make your signature appear properly at the end of your post (so that people know who you are and can easily contact you), you can end your post with four tildes ("~~~~" without the quotes). Please note that, unlike on Wikipedia talk pages, they want you to put new ideas *first* (rather than last) on this page.

That page itself is something between a place to keep ideas, a fully fledged feature requests. Feature requests posted there will be seen by developers, but in posting that link I also intended for you to see the information it provides about feature requests, which includes mention of http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=93438&atid=604309 (where feature requests are tracked like bugs). If you were a member of the project, and thus able to post there, then of course I would recommend that you use that.

It seems that Inkscape uses SourceForge.net for some development facilities, and Launchpad.net for others. According to the pages on the Inkscape wiki, SourceForge.net is used for submitting feature requests formally, and that apparently can only be done by members of the project. Reporting bugs, on the other hand, is done on Launchpad, and anyone with a Launchpad.net account can do it. But then, as if to contradict this, if you click the "Request Features" link on the left side of http://inkscape.org/ (it's under Community), it brings you to Inkscape's page on Launchpad. So I would suggest that, in addition to posting your feature request in the wiki, you also post it using https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug.

Before filing your feature request here on Launchpad, you should search through the bugs in Inkscape, to see if it's already been filed (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape -- and remember that the few bugs shown on that page aren't all the bugs filed; you'll have to browse and/or search through all the open bugs, and I suggest the latter since there are almost 3000 of them).

Feature requests (and bugs, generally) for applications **as they are in Ubuntu** (these are the downstream versions, to answer your question), so long as they are specific, can be filed against the package in Ubuntu. This is, generally speaking, a separate action from the filing of upstream feature requests and bugs. So, if you wish, after filing your feature request on Launchpad against the project Inkscape, you could use the "Also affects distribution" link to mark it as affecting the package inkscape in the project Ubuntu, as well. I don't see any harm in doing this, though there may not be much benefit either, since the Ubuntu project is unlikely to implement this feature specially for Ubuntu--it will probably only make it into inkscape in Ubuntu if it makes it into the upstream version. If you do mark your feature request as affecting inkscape in Ubuntu, then you are, in effect, reporting a "bug" in Ubuntu as well, so in that case, you should really read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs before filing it initially.

Whether or not you decide to file the report as affecting inkscape in Ubuntu as well as Inkscape, after filing your feature request here on Launchpad, you should link it and this question to each other by using the "Link existing bug" link near the top of this question page. However, it should not be necessary for the Inkscape developers (nor the Ubuntu developers) to refer to this question, in order to fully understand and appreciate your feature request. It should, instead, be completely self-contained.

[P.S. Sorry about the further delay--Launchpad went read-only for an hour and a half for maintenance, so I had to wait until that was done before posting this.]

No, that is usually outdated information - Inkscape uses sourceforge only hosting the release packages (and for the sources of the web site at the moment - this will change once the new web site is done, up & running). All other tasks have been moved to launchpad services.

> SourceForge.net is used for submitting feature requests formally

No, this is definitely outdated information that needs to be corrected in the wiki.

@Greg - please see
Bug #171930 in Inkscape: “File Properties”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171930>

IMHO that covers your request well.

I have edited the wiki (this page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FeatureNotePad) to reflect that Launchpad is used for both bug reports and feature requests. Sorry about the delay. I hope that edit is OK. If something additional (or different) should be said, I'd be pleased to edit it again in accordance with your advice.
