only part of text shows

Asked by colin sieff

I generated a pedigree in a UNIX app called Madeline using OSX 10.6 and displayed the .xml output file in Inkscape. The legend takes its label from the header of the spreadsheet (in NeoOffice) eg Affected_gene, but on the drawing only Affecte.... shows up. I tried making the font smaller but that had no effect. Can someone please help (I'm much more adept at Illustrator).

Try using the text-tool to extend the text box (handle at bottom right). It sounds like the text is probably all there but that the box holding it isn't large enough?

Have you checked in the XML file to see if the whole text is present, it could be when you create the file that the legend is not all being copied across.

Maybe a problem further upstream.

Sorry to be such an ignoramus, but when I choose the text tool (A with cursor next to it) then the text highlights or selects with a dotted line around it, no handle at bottom right. When I use the edit paths by nodes tool, the same thing happens, even though a drawing object does select with 3 handles. So I'm not sure how to make that text box bigger. I did just discover that I can select the Text and retype the whole word and more, and it shows up, but that is an extra step I'd prefer to avoid.

For anyone else interested, this appears to be the app http://eyegene.ophthy.med.umich.edu/madeline/index.php.

It sounds like it's not flowed text (where you can adjust the text area with a handle) but just "regular text". In which case it seems that the output probably is cutting off the hidden parts - you can check this by looking for "affecte" in the XML file and seeing if the whole of the text is actually present in the file or not.

If you're not sure how to do this then upload the file to a file sharing space online (use a dropbox link if you have that; or http://www.easy-share.com/ seems to work) so someone here can have a look.

It sounds very much like there is a fault in Madeline's SVG (?) output.

Thanks for your reply. I uploaded the file to easy-share. It is called FAM0001ped.xml. Please trash the file when you are done.
Thanks,
Colin

Could you please provide the download link? Without it, you can't download a shared file from easylink. AFAICT the filename itself is not sufficient.

The text is already shortened in the XML file - AFAICT nothing Inkscape could do about that, it must have happened somewhere earlier in the toolchain used to create the XML file (you can easily verify it yourself by opening the XML file in a plain text editor (e.g. TextEdit on the Mac)):

-- snip --

       <text
         x="285.20001"
         y="108.787"
         id="text259"
         style="font-size:12px;text-anchor:middle;font-family:'"DejaVu Sans", sans-serif'">AffectedHeme</text>

-- snip --

     <text
         x="285.2"
         y="167.574"
         text-anchor="middle"
         id="text269">Affecte...</text>

-- snip --

      <text
         x="285.2"
         y="226.361"
         text-anchor="middle"
         id="text279">Affecte...</text>

--- snip --

BTW - some of the testdata XML files have similar shortened text fields, see e.g. 'ic_005' on the Madeline web site:
<http://eyegene.ophthy.med.umich.edu/madeline/testdata/#ic>
