To change the thickness of a line, first select it, then, in the main menu, click Object > Fill and Stroke... In the Fill and Stroke properties box that appears, select the Stroke Style tab. There you can change various line properties, the first being Width.

You can change the thickness of several lines at once if you select them all first, just hold down SHIFT while clicking each line; alternatively, click-drag a selection box around all the lines you want to select, or use Edit > Select All (CTRL + A) to select everything in one go.

When I try to select a line nothing happens, I get arrow boxes around the entire drawing. I select all and get the nodes but I can not change the thickness. It is not highlighted for me to select. I must not be doing the selecting correctly. I will look it up in the help section. In case I need help, how do you select something.? Should I change the width before using the tracing feature? Thanks

I am scanning in a drawing. Are you able to change the width of the line with a scanned drawing? Could this be why I can't change the width?

At first I thought you had used the line tools to do the tracing yourself, but now I think you've used Trace Bitmap. If that's the case then it's understandable why my first answer didn't work: by default Trace Bitmap creates filled areas with no Stroke to adjust the thickness of.

You can choose to add a Stroke—by going to the "Stroke paint" tab of the Fill and Stroke properties, and then clicking the plain square, which represents Flat Colour—and even then adjust its thickness as I previously described, but that can result in unwanted side effects.

Your best bet is probably to use Inset and Outset, or Dynamic Offset, which are all found in the Path menu, and described in the manual:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Editing.html#Paths-Offsets

Can you help with this problem?
