How to increase size of document

Asked by Eduardo Barriga

I have several model airplane plans scanned from magazines. They are reduced to fit the magazine pages. How can I increase the size of the plan, for instance, four or five times so that when I print the plan, it comes out full size to build the model? I just haven't found anywhere how to do this simple operation.

You can do this in Inkscape but I'd use a raster image editor, like The GIMP.

In Inkscape you'd drag-drop an image into a new canvas or use File > Import (Ctrl+i). Make sure the image is selected. Then use the toolbar, click the lock icon to lock the aspect ratio, use the drop down to select "mm" say (for millimetres) and then input the W (width) or H (height) that you want for the final image.

Then print, presumably you have access to a large scale printer?

Some printers will handle pagination to do overlapping prints that you can tape together but I don't think this is part of Inkscape yet.

The reason I'd use The GIMP is so that I could easily touch up the image, remove scanning artefacts and improve contrast before printing. Resizing is very similar though - Image > Scale Image or Image > Print Size would do it, then just print as normal.

Thank you very much for your reply. I can see it is not easy to increase
image size with Inkscape so I will give a try to GIMP. If I have any more
doubts, i will contact you.

Yes I do have access to a large printer in Bogotá, That's no problem. I
don't particularly like to stitch several small scans of the plan. Usually
they are deformed in the scanning process. That's why I prefer to scan from
magazine size, then increase to full size and send to printers.

Thanks again!!

Eduardo

No worries, I've had a long day and sort of missed the last bit off the Inkscape directions - you need to open the page dialog (toolbar button or File>Document Properties or Ctrl+Shift+D) and then choose "Fit Page to Selection". Which shrinks/enlarges the page ...

Happy to answer follow on questions here.
