CM2320fxi does not print duplex anymore

Asked by donk

On Suse 11.1 for CM2320fxi connected as network printer. Network includes this Linux host and two Windows hosts. Have been able to print duplex OK from all hosts for months.

Recently installed Windows 7 64-bit on both Windows hosts and installed new Windows 7 64-bit HP printer software for the CM2320 on each.

Now my Linux host will not print duplex even though I've configured properly using both CUPS and hp-toolbox. Have run hp-check with 0 errors. The Windows hosts print duplex without any problem.

Seem to remember that the Windows HP software upgraded the firmware on the printer. Wondering if that could be the cause.

I think I've tried everything everything suggested in troubleshooting guide.

Hi Donk,

Looking at the output it seems that everything is fine except for one warning that the file "/etc/cups/cupsd.conf " is not present or not accessible. Can you open the file and see if the contents are there or is it zero byte file or does it have read permission omitted.

I would also suggest you to try the following step for troubleshooting.

1) Remove all printers listed in HP Device Manager.
2) Open cups page from http://localhost:631 and go to administration and remove any printers listed there too. Then add a new printer and select the correct printer make and model.

Alternatively if you have access to some other linux machine of the same distro as you are using presently then try copying the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and restart the cup using "/etc/init.d/cups restart"

If it still doesn't help then I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall cups from your package manager or whatever way you are comfortable.

I've tried all that and the symptoms are the same.

Here are the steps I followed none of which had any benefit as far as
resolving the problem of printing 2-sided:

1. Found that /etc/cups/cupsd.conf had root-only read permissions. Changed
permission as follows: chmod a+r /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. Tested.

2. Removed all printers listed in HP Device Manager. The cups admin page
showed no printers after this.

3. Added HP_Color_LaserJet_cm2320fxi_MFP printer and fax using HP Device
Manger.

4. Removed cups, cups-lib, and cups-driver using SuSE Yast.

5. Reinstalled cups, cups-lib, and cups-driver using SuSE Yast. Tested.

6. Removed hplip and hplip-hpjis using SuSE Yast.

7. Tried to add printer but CUPS didn't show correct options for printer and
all hp utils failed to execute complaining of missing hpmudext.so (which was
installed in /usr/lib64/...)

8. Removed hplip and hplip-hpjis using SuSE Yast.

9. Downloaded and installed hplip 3.9.12 from
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. Installed required plug-
in when requested. Installation was error-free.

10. Added HP_Color_LaserJet_cm2320fxi_MFP printer and fax using HP Device
Manger.

11. Set options with HP Device Manager, in particular: Duplex = Two sided,
Duplex Unit = On (grayed-out).

12. Tested using:
      a. lp -d HP_Color_LaserJet_CM2320fxi_MFP -o sides=two-sided-long-edge
~drodgers/Documents/services.txt

      b. Printed document with OpenOffice (after setting Duplexer installed)

13. Opened http://localhost:631/printers and selected Set Printer Options.
Saw that Duplex Unit was show as Not Installed and 2-Sided Printing was off
for some reason (had set both correctly with HP Device Manager).

14. Corrected Set Printer Options so that Duplex Unit was Installed and 2-
Sided Printing was Long-Edge Binding. Clicked Set Printer Options. Verified.

15. Retested as above. Still printing single-sided.

16. Windows 7 computers connected to this networked printer print 2-sided
correctly.

17. Problem started when I installed HP printer software on Windows 7 computer
and it updated firmware on printer.

18. hp-check -t attached.

Still unable to print duplex after trying all suggestions. Any info on the
updated printer firmware installed by the HP windows software update?

I also have this issue. A couple weeks ago I added this printer to the options on a vista laptop. The vista laptop then happily installed a firmware update to the printer. Ever since, I haven't been able to duplex from linux machines. This is quite maddening.

I'm a former HP employee, and I'm not surprised that the Linux folks don't talk to the Windows folks. They may not even know each other exists. But this seems to require a meeting of the minds. I opened this in December and have had no suggestions other than to reinstall everything including CUPS. I did all that, which was just a waste of a lot of time.

I contacted HP about this specific issue. They were sort of difficult to get past the tier 1 support dork, but everything was very smooth with the tier 2 technician. He got back to me frequently, phone calls, emails....was excellent. I explained the exact issue...and requested the original (downgrade) firmware.
I was supplied the downgrade firmware from their ftp server and installed it with an xp box (vista box did the original update). Instantly, with no client changes, all linux hosts could print duplex again.

The updated firmware was supposedly to 'fix internal communication' and 'fax enhancements'. I have noticed more disappearing jobs since the downgraded firmware, but I'd rather they disappear occasionally than eat twice as much paper.

So, I can confirm that it is absolutely due to a change in the communication internals of the printer. Something changed.

I would really like to know what they changed in the firmware that hplip can't seem to figure out. I'm still using the original firmware and having no problems, but every time a windows machine hits the network it wants to automatically install the new firmware over the network.
This is like a denial of service exploit caused by any windows machine....could deny the service of duplex. :)

Well, I would like to see HP fix this by issuing either a new firmware or a new ppd file. After all, the duplexer was exactly the reason why I bought this model and not one of the cheaper machines. Bad enough that it needs a binary plugin for network scanning directly to the computer (which I did not get to work with my FreeBSD machines here either - but well, maybe it's a Linux-only thingie, who knows?).

Now, that I've read this thread, I've understood what happened to me.

I bought this printer because of duplex and only the first day I could print duplex on linux. I thought it was something with cups, as I tried other cups drivers because of bluish color of greys. But now I remember that I installed the windows clients and upgraded the firmware.

I can confirm this behaviour for every version of cups since 1.3.11

Can you help with this problem?
