my hp1018 is no longer printing-I get a no devices discovered error

Asked by Fred Dyck

My hp1018 hooked up through my USB connection using Ubuntu9.10 with the latest driver was working fine. Now it stopped working and I get a no devices discovered on USB when I try to reload the driver. I ran hp-check and here are the results

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Launch a terminal window and type hp-plugin command. Follow the GUI instructions , in your case you need to browse to the downloaded plug-in file.

Let me know if this does not help you out.

One correction , you also need to download the hplip-3.9.10-plugin.run.asc file at the same path of hplip3.9.10.plugin. Both files can be found at below link:

http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/

Follow the below steps:
(a) Launch the terminal.
(b) Login as root. Can be done by sudo su command
(c) Run hp-plugin command. GUI window is seen.
(d) Click the Radio button "Select and install an existing local copy of the plug-in file(advanced). Browse to the path of downloaded plug-in file.
(e) Click Next
(f) Accept the Driver Plugin License agreement check-box. Click Next.

You must recieve message as Plug-in installation successful. Can you please re-try the above steps?

If the above steps does not resolve your issue, you might require to re-install hplip.

Step 1: Clean-up older versions of HPLIP

(a) On Ubuntu 9.10 , hplip 3.9.8 version is pre-bundled.
Launch synaptic package manager. Mark for complete removal following packages, if they are installed. << hplip , hplip-cups , hplip-data, hplip-gui, hpijs >>

(b) If you have hplip 3.9.10 auto-installed than you can uninstall with below steps
Go into the source directory (Say , if its on the desktop)
cd ~/Desktop/hplip-3.9.10
sudo make uninstall

Step 2: Remove the printers queues installed.

(a) Goto: http://localhost:631
(b) Select Printer Tab
(c) Select the printer queue and delete the printer.

Step 3: Install the latest version of hplip.

(a) For Ubuntu 9.10 we have automatic installer which can be downloaded from below path:
www.hplipopensource.com

Step 4: Install the plugin (only incase your printer model requires)

Hope, this solves your issue. Sorry, for the inconvenience!

Thanks,

A
