Ubuntu 9.04 can't find HP 6500 scanner via wifi

I have an HP 6500 AIO device connected via wifi. It works normally under Ubuntu 9.04's normal printer setup for printing. However, device is not detected by hp-setup, so no scanner/fax operation. (Everything works normally under Windows XP.)

hp-check (below) complains that printers are not installed using hp: cups backend, but I find no way to set them up with an alternate backend. What to do?

None of your printer queues are using the hp:// backend.

Run:

hp-makeuri ip.address.of.printer

where ip.address.of.printer is the actual printer IP address.

and post the output.

Also you can try running hp-setup, select network, then manual discovery, enter the printer ip address and continue the hp-setup process.

I have tried both. I should have mentioned the results. Neither hp-makeuri
nor hp-setup can find the '6500 on the network, even when running as root:

$sudo hp-makeuri 192.168.1.144

sudo hp-setup, selecting default "Network/Ethernet/Wireless..." option,
finds a different printer, my LJ1200, but not the '6500. Trying "manual
discovery" on the IP address gives "no devices found". I get the same
results when using Ethernet instead of wireless connections.

Pinging the IP address works fine.

I see that the 6500 does not appear in models.dat distributed in Ubuntu 9.04 as version "3.9.2-3ubuntu4". And checking on the hplip site, I see that I really need v 3.9.4 for this printer model.

Sadly, I think I know what I have to do... :-(

Here's a simple solution:
- Download the latest hplip tarball from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html
- Open or extract the tarball (e.g. /tmp/hplip-3.9.10).
- Make a backup copy of the "models.dat" file in "/usr/share/hplip/data/models".
- Navigate to the "/tmp/hplip-3.9.10/data/models" folder and copy the "models.dat" file to "/usr/share/hplip/data/models".
- Run "sudo hp-makeuri -g <your.printer.ip>" (192.168.1.32 in my case)

You will see this output:
