PSC2110 scanner won't set up

Asked by Dexter N Muir

Tried per Aaron's suggestion, "hp-setup" not found, no mention of printer or scanner in syslog, also no scanner group. Added me to lp group, but no change. hplip 3.9.2 from Mandriva 2009.1, PSC2110 MY24PB30BY0F. Prints test page OK, but won't set up scanner. Trying to work towards OCR - Xsane reports no scanner found.

Looks like a few dependencies missing: libusb, SANE devel library,
libnetsnmp-devel. '~/.hplip/hplip.conf' file not found probably due to
above?
Control Centre reports libusb0.1_4 0.1.12-12mdv2009.1 installed, also
libksane0 4.2.2-6mdv2009.1, libsane1 1.0.19-7mdv2009.1. libsane-hpaio1
3.9.2-2mdv2009.1 is available but not installed. Libnetsnmp15
5.4.2.1-5mdv2009.1 is installed, but -devel not available.
Did I do something wrong, or not do something I should? What's the
next step?

Hopefully.... Dex

We are not testing the HPLIP 3.9.2 that comes with Mandriva 2009. If possible, try upgrading to the latest HPLIP from our website. http://hplipopensource.com

The automatic installer does not support mandriva, you can look over the manual install instructions for installing on Mandriva.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/mandriva.html

Hope this helps.

You are getting this error because net-snmp-dev is probably not installed. Try installing the package? The package name is either this or something close. Although all of the distros usually change the name to their own naming convention.

Hope this helps..

Hi Aaron

Installed net-snmp-devel, and repeats of ./config revealed lack of
similar devels for usb and sane. Installed these, and the rest of the
make, install and configuration per website worked fine.
Next hiccup: Xsane reports 'failed to open device: ... Error during
device I/O.' Where to now?

Hi Aaron

The same machine had an Xp Home system on it, and it was working
perfectly until a recent fall-over (I'm getting help from m$oft for
this). This is the reason I want to get it running with the Linux.
I've also farmed it into the wife's Xp Pro machine, and it works fine
there too...

I'm puzzled - our testing has had it detected, and it reports the
device's serial number. After getting that far, what is now hiccupping?

Is it possible to test on a windows system to make sure that the printer
is working correctly?

Thanks.

Looking over your syslog again this appears to be a permissions issue.

Try adding your user to the lp and scanner group.

Also edit the file:

/etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules

and change all of the 660 to 666, then save the file, exit, disconnect and reconnect the printer.

Hope this helps.

Hi Aaron

I'm already in the 2 groups. Editing rules file seems to have made a
minor difference: the printer now gives a message on screen when
disconnected and re-connected (don't recall this before, but not sure).
Still get error from Xsane reporting device serial number. This even
after reboot.

Continuing...

Try deleting the printer queue and running hp-setup again to configure the queue?

Any difference?

Thanks.

Hi Aaron

Done as directed, still get the device I/O error.

Frustrated... Does Mandriva even deign to consider support for hp
peripherals (not to denigrate your efforts)?

Mandriva has worked in the past, however we are no longer testing on Mandriva. This would seem to be a permissions problem. Hopefully another mandriva user can provide more insight.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Aaron
