Setting up an HP printer in Linux

Asked by Mike Davies

I have just bought an HP2820 printer which I am trying to set up on wifi. I have connected the printer and I can print from my tablet.
I would like to access the printer from my PC running Opensuse Linux. The PC is connected to the router on eth0 and I have a directly connected Epson printer. I would like to be able to use the HP printer as well.
How do I set up to connect to the printer which is on the same network?

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/howtos/install#howtocheck1
Scroll down to: How to unblock ports and enable services in the firewall
follow the instruction for Open SUSE.

To install HPLIP on Open SUSE:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/downloads

HPLIP should be in Open SUSE repository.

I have HPLIP installed.
I have tried to follow the instructions on unblocking ports but YAST I have doesn't seem to have the same layout as suggested.

After reading 'Network Printers' in that documentation I ran nmap:

mike@linux:~> nmap -p 35,137-139,515,631,9100-10000 192.168.178.43
Starting Nmap 7.70 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2024-04-26 10:20 BST
Nmap scan report for HP021FD6.fritz.box (192.168.178.43)
Host is up (0.0078s latency).
Not shown: 905 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
631/tcp open ipp
9100/tcp open jetdirect

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.49 seconds

This has recognised the printer at that IP address. and shows 2 ports
open. Does this help?
