filter/foomatic-rip failed Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by David Vincent-Jones

I am now having a problem with one of my two printers.

My HP Photosmart Pro B8800 works/prints just fine.

My HP 970 Cxi has stopped functioning.
I am getting the printing error message '/usr/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed'

In order to try and remedy the situation:
I have just installed the latest HPLIP and at the conclusion I was able to run a test print.
I then immediately used the HP device manager to try and run a second test print .. it failed.
No other software is able to print through this printer.

The situation appears to be as a result of installing the latest hplip
version. I have double, double checked the paper setup in Device
Manager, CUPS and on any software from which I have tried to print, all
without success.

On the B8850 I am now unable to print anything ... even a test from the
Device Manager. All I get is much thrashing sounds and all lights
rapidly flashing for a few seconds and then nothing. If I turn off the
printer, unplug, wait, clear outstanding jobs from the buffer and then
reconnect again ... the same result.

On the Deskjet 970cxi ink levels are no longer shown.

Below is the output that you requested.

Just made a test of the b8800 through my Windows XP partition.
This was more than anything to check for a hardware malfunction.
Ran the test page and diagnostic page. Both ran correctly.

How do I get back to an earlier version of the software that could be more reliable?

I have now installed (in desperation) the most recent hplip driver. This appears to now work allowing me to utilize both printers.

Two outstanding issues only: only 7 of the 8 ink levels show for the B8850 and No ink levels show for the 970Cxi.

Hey David,

I haven't been able to reproduce the foomatic-rip failed problem, although it looks like you are working now.

I'm looking at the ink levels for the B8850 and I have found a problem with the Matte Black not showing up.

The Inks showed should be:

Photo Black
Light Gray
Matte Black
Cyan
Magenta
Yellow
Light Magenta
Light Cyan

The Inks currently being displayed are:

Photo black
Light gray
Cyan ink
Magenta ink
Yellow ink
Photo cyan
Photo magenta

So there are 3 problems:

The Matte Black isn't showing up.
The names displayed are not consistent with what are on the device.
The order of the inks are not consistent with what are on the device.

My ink levels output: (minus levels graphics)

Photo magenta and photo cyan print head

Photo cyan ink cartridge
Part No.: HP 38 (C9418A)

Photo magenta ink cartridge

I'll work on having this fixed in the next release of HPLIP.

Thanks for the feedback--we appreciate it.

Also as for the 970, we are no longer adding any new functionality for devices out of full support.

Sorry about that.

The missing black ink level will be fixed in the next public release of HPLIP,
scheduled to be 3.9.10.

We will not be fixing the ink naming or ordering issues at this time.
