required binary driver-plugin for computer without internet connection
I want to install a new laserjet p1005 on a computer not connected to the internet. OS is ubuntu 9.04, there is a hplip software (3.9.2) already installed. The installation procedure requires a binary driver-plugin for that printer but I can't download it directly with this computer. Is there any other way to receive this plugin? I can connect to the internet by another computer, but this is not the one where the the printer should be installed.
Thanks for any help

Download the file on another PC:
http://
copy it over to the other PC, and then run it in a terminal:
$ ./hplip-
or, you can also run hp-plugin and use the option to install the plugin from
a local file, and point it at the file you copied over.

Meanwhile I got your answer, thank you for your prompt response,
but I'm not sure whether this will solve my problem. It is not the HPLIP software itself that I'm missing (this is already part of the ubuntu distribution and is running). So, as you proposed, I want to run hp-plugin (or hp-setup) and point it at the required file. But as far as I understand the procedure this file is not identical with "hplip-
(This is what the HPLIP page says to the Laserjet p1005:
This printer REQUIRES a downloadable driver plug-in. Use hp-setup to install the printer, and to download and install the plug-in. In general, required driver plugins are required for printing support. Driver plug-ins are released under a proprietary (non-open) license and are not part of the HPLIP tarball release.)
Unfortunately all other PCs I can use to connect to the internet are Windows-based, so I can't run hplip there.

I'm still looking for a way to get the required binary driver plugin:
Meanwhile I asked the HP support, but they said that's not their business (although the plugin is under proprietary license).
Donwloading the HPLIP software does not help because the plugin is not included.
I can't use the internet with my private PC because it has no internet connection.
With the PC at my working place I can connect to the internet, but it is not the place where the printer shall be installed (and it is an MS Windows OS)
So the problem seems to be unsolvable unless there is an other way to get the plugin.
(I think, I have to look for another printer ...)

1. Download hplip-3.
Windows machines.
2. Use your LAN connection, USB thumb drive, etc. to transfer the file to
your Linux machine.
3.On the Linux machine, run hp-plugin, and use the option to install from a
local file, and point it at the file you just copied over.

I have an HP P1505n printer that I'm trying to get the plug-in file for Linux Suse 10.2. I am running hplip 2.8.2 and when I run hp-setup to try and download the plug-in I am blocked or there is a firewall prohibiting me (customer site) from downloading the plugin. Is there a binary plugin file I can get for the P1505n printer to manually install using my hp-setup tool ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

you can download the binary plugin file
"wget http://
after you download give the executable permission to file hplip-3.
execute in commend line as "sh hplip-3.
it will ask you for public key. if you don't have internet connection at that point of time you can ignore that warning.

I went to the link you gave me and there is no file for hplip version
2.8.2. However, there is a file called "hp_laserjet_
appears to be exactly what I need. However this binary will not execute on
my system. I did check the executable permissions on the file and even
changed them to 777 without any success. Is there something special I need
to do to use this plugin file ?
Will placing this file in the plugin folder and manually choosing it
during an hp-setup session work ?
Thanks again.

download hp_laserjet_
please run "hp-plugin -g" and give the file path in second option to hp_laserjet_
This file is not an executable. it is an archive.
hp-plugin will untar it and copy the files in archive to different locations.
you can try "hp-plugin -i" also.
plugin.conf file is available at http://
if none of then didn't work please attach "hp-plugin -g" output.
Hope this Helps,

With version hplip-2.8.2 and version 2.8.4, I tried running the command :
"hp-plugin -g hp_laserjet_
The command failed and generated this output :
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/
from base import device, utils, tui, module
File "/usr/share/
class Module(object):
File "/usr/share/
def getDeviceUri(self, device_uri=None, printer_name=None,
back_end_
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'DEFAULT_BE_FILTER'
After this, I tried installing version 2.8.6b and was unable to because my
client's network (Caterpillar Inc.) prevented the installer from getting
out (firewall I'm sure). Curiously, older versions do not try to get out
to the web like I think this version was trying to do ?
Any suggestions ?? I'm almost ready to give up.........but not yet.
Thanks again.
