/etc/init.d/hplip is broken

Asked by jdenman

On DIstribution OpenSuse 11.0 hplip won't start because all of the options in the script are to stop.
All options give the same message
"Since HPLIP 2.8.4 hpssd is gone. Stopping it in any case:"
python /usr/bin/hp-systray is running without anything on the tray or screen,
As a result, faxs can't be sent to the hp fax machine; it's broken

HPLIP 2.8.4 is very old. Please upgrade to the latest version of HPLIP and try faxing again.

Also, we stopped using the daemons all together after 2.8.4, or so.

Hope this helps.

I have 3.9.6-15.pm.13 installed If I said otherwise, I made a mistake.
I believe that a reply came to me about 2.8.4, but I don't recall my
query that references the older version. I believe that the update this
last week from SuSE caused the problem and I have filed a report to
them.

Thanks,

Jack

FYI:
From the RPM changelog for our hplip packages for
openSUSE 11.0:
-----------------------------------------------
- Updated to version 2.8.4:
Elimination of all persistent startup daemons.
The last daemon hpssd has been replaced with hp-systray.
...
- Adapted the hplip init script to provide backward compatibility:
It still exists to avoid that printer/scanner setup tools fail
when they try to enable the "hplip" service but all it does
is to stop a possibly running hpssd.
