Dynamic IP requires manual updating

Asked by Eitan

I'm connecting to my printer over the network. hp-setup finds and sets up the printer with CUPS with no problem, but every time the router gets reset, the printer is assigned a new IP address and I'm forced to manually update the CUPS printers.conf with the new address. Is there any way I can avoid this or get the address to update automatically?

We don't currently have a software solution for this (we are investigating
adding Bonjour/mDNS support for printer URIs), but the interim solution for
this until we do is to setup a static IP address in your printer, and
exclude that address (or range of addresses) from your router's DHCP range.
Check your printer and router manuals on how to accomplish this.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll check if I can use static IP without preventing the computers running Windows from finding it properly. I'd certainly vote for adding one of those ASAP, but I don't (atm) have the time or skills to do it myself.

By the way:
Usually it is possible to set up the DHCP server so that
it assigns the same IP address to the same MAC address
(so called "automatic allocation") which should result
in the end a sufficiently static behaviour.

This will be fixed in the next release of HPLIP (3.9.8).

When released, you will need to delete your printer with the URI that
contains the hard-coded IP address and rerun hp-setup to create a
URI that contains the printer's hostname.
