My HP F4280 printer will not print from computer

I have recently installed Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS from DVD that came with Official Ubuntu Book. I have a new HP Deskjet F4280 printer. The printer does not print a document from PC. Printer does photocopy though. I installed hplip -3.9.4b and the printer DID PRINT the test page. but not a document .. Somehow I managed to to do an 'hp-check' ( can't remember how! ) and I will try and add the hp-check log to this report. I do have several other questions and problems that I would and swered and solved but I will leave these for another time .. Cheers Brian Phillips

Hi Aaron. Thank you for reply. I ran hp-testpage ant the test page
printed ok.
I copied and pasted into OpenOffice an email I sent to a friend but that
would not print.
Then I typed an original doc into OpenOffice and tried to print that.
No luck at all in any of these. Ouch.

Thanks Aaron. I opened gedit, typed a few sentences and IT DID PRINT OUT.

I also printed out a photo and although it took a long time to go
through to the printer, it did print.

 I do not understand what you mean by print using firefox. How please?
And I cannot understand why OpenOffice did not print out.

I also tried to to open other files in gedit and got this:-

    " gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again. "

 Question #73893 Hi Aaron. In my default printer section I have a choice given to me of 'Deskjet_4200' and 'Deskjet_4200_series' . My printer prints when default is set to the 'Deskjet_4200' BUT NOT WHEN SET TO THE 'Deskjet_4200_SERIES ' So I believe my printing problem is solved. Thank you for your help. Brian.
