scanning : error during device I/O for colorlaserjet cm1312nfi

Asked by girard

I am using this printer on my network. I can print, but using Xsane I get the following message "error during device I/O".

I am using Ubuntu 9,04 and HPLIP 3,9,2

Did you run hp-setup to configure the printer? I'm not seeing any printer queues configured.

If not, to configure the printer run: sudo hp-setup

If you did run: hp-makeuri 192.168.0.101

and post the output.

I don't see any errors in your hp-check that would cause any problems for printing.

Thanks.

Waouh, it's fast, it's brilliant... It's linux world !!

I did not remember if I used hp setup, as I am running my printer
without scan for a while. Therefore I followed your tips and I got now
in my HPLIP two printers (one is the printer, the other one the fax).

But unfortunately I still just can't scan (both with Xsane and HPLIP). I
just get the same message : "error during device I/O"

Below the result of hp-makeuri 192.168.0.101 :

Done.

Everything looks okay.

Run:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

Then try and scan and post the output in the syslog.

I've tested the CM131 with a network connection with Ubuntu 9.04 and scanning is working correctly.

This printer requires the plugin to work correctly with scanning.

Did you run:

sudo hp-setup

to configure the printer? You have to configure the printer by running this.

Okay, there is a problem with hp-check where it's not detecting some printer queues under some conditions. We're looking at correcting this in a future release.

For now lets run:

sudo hp-plugin

to make sure that the plugin is installed.

Then try and scan again.

If you don't mind, I have a fix for hp-check that I'd like you to try. If you are willing send me an email at ke7ezt(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll send you the file and how to run it.

Thanks!

Excuse me but what do you mean as resolving these dependencies ? I do not understand what you actually did, and I am eager to test it !

Go to synaptic and download all the packages that I've mentioned before, for example "python-software-properties", then "python-smbc" and so on ... When you've done, install the last version of hplip from the hplip website http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html (it would be 3.9.4b. version)

Hey Dude !

I just checked throughout Synaptic the set up of Python devices, that I
actually already got...

So I did try installing HPLIP 3,9,4b, but I got a message from gedit
which declare that it cannot open
file /home/franck/Bureau/hplip-3.9.4b.run.

Please help, my linux skill is not accurate enough...

Ubuntu 9.04 comes with HPLIP 3.9.2. So installing the dependencies will not correct a scanning problem. Also all of the packages you installed are python-*. Which also would have no effect on scanning.

More than likely re-installing HPLIP fixed a possible issue.

Please try installing the latest version of HPLIP, 3.9.4b, from our website: http://hplipopensource.com

The automatic installer fully supports Ubuntu 9.04 and HPLIP should be easily installed.

Hey Aaron,

As mentionned in my previous post, I just cannot
launch hplip-3.9.4b.run. I get a gedit message
mentionning a problem with binary coding...

Oups, what's up then ?

Aaron you're right; but with hplip 3.9.2 installed from synaptic my scanner didn't work... and when I tried to install the newest version from the official website it crashed always during installation and I don't know why. In the Italian ubuntu's forum one gay suggest me to install all the python dependecies (the hplip "language" I suppose). After that the installation of hplip works percfectly. This is my experience and this is the way that I solve my problem http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/index.php/topic,290698.0/all.html

Hi Aaron,

I just come back to you as I still did not fix my problem concerning the
scan.

I today retry to install the latest version of hplip but there is still
a problem of character coding that I do not understand at all.

Sorry to bother you once more, but if you should have any trick, I am
still interested...

Thanks.

Hi Aaron,

I just try to install the latest version of HPLIP, but I still get the
same message from gedit concerning a problem of caracters encoding.
Therefore, it stops the installation of HPLIP 3,9,6b.

And I don't know how to manage it directly from a console...

Ciao

Okay. Lets try looking at the syslog again and see if it will give us any better output so we can narrow down the problem.

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

then try and scan using xsane, then post the output in the syslog.

Also, what is the exact error you are getting when you try and install HPLIP 3.9.6b?

Thanks.

Concerning the set up of HPLIP 3,9,6b, the message I get from gedit is :
Impossible to open the file /home/franck/bureau/hplip-3,9,6b.run.
gedit is not able to detect the encoding caracters. Check out you don't
attempt to open binary file. Select a different encoding down the menu
and try again...

Then the menu allow me to choose between the following choices :
 - UTF-8
 - UTF-32
 - ISO-8859-15

I warn you it is a translation from french. I just hope it will help !

Okay this makes more sense. The error means that the plugin isn't installed.

You don't edit the hplip-3.9.6b.run file in gedit, you run the file.

For more specific information on how to use the .run file please see:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

More than likely this will be resolved by, installing HPLIP 3.9.6b, then runnning hp-setup to configure the printer and be sure to install the plugin. (you'll be prompted)

Hope this helps.
