Unable to scan using the slide and negative scanner

I have a HP C8180 with slide and negative scanning ability. Xsane 0.995 doesn't recognise the top scanner. Is there a fix or do I still need to keep my Windows environment for this? I want to be able to change the scan resolution to a higher res than the machine offers as default. I can scan from the machine to media and the Ubuntu just picks it up from the memory card etc. But I am stuck with relatively low resolution. HPLIP doesn't help here??

Hi Aaron,

Below is the result of the test. I am very new to Linux/Ubuntu and wasn't
sure I could do as you asked. Just gave it a punt and hey presto!

I have only recently installed the HP Photosmart C8180 and replaced my
Canon Lide 25 and HP Businessjet 1200.

I have been able to scan slides and negatives to this computer by scanning
to a memory card in the Photosmart and the computer immediately recognises
the new file and downloads it with F-spot. I just can't scan using commands
from Xsane, which doesn't recognise there is a secondary scanner in the lid
of the device.

The Photosmart is networked and my other computer which is running Windows
XP with HP Solution Centre is just hopelessly slow and very very very
unstable. I find I am really only using the Linux system to access and use
the Photosmart!

I'm not clear from your message if you can print or scan originals other than slides. The network printer connection under 'Installed CUPS Print Queues' above shows 'error: Communication status: Failed' so it would appear that this is not just a problem with slide scanning but with the connection itself. It may be that the printer is no longer at the IP address shown.

I suggest you delete the printer from your printer list and then re-add it by running 'hp-setup' as root. It the printer is not found then it is not connected to your network. If you're using the wired/Ethernet connection, check the cable. If you're using wireless, press the Setup button on the printer, go down to Network and press OK, and go to Wireless Setup Wizard and press OK and follow the prompts.

Hi Andrew,

The scanner and printer work perfectly with the computer. Its just that the
computer doesn't recognise that the scanner has 2 scanning devices. One on
the normal platen and one in the scanner lid. The program scans with the
flatbed platen scanner without any problems but not the lid scanner. I
would like to be able to activate the scan from the computer because that's
the only way I can adjust the scan resolution. Otherwise I have to use the
HP All in One default scanning resolutions for negs and slides.

I have had no problems with the network arrangement through a cisco router.

The printer doesn't actually have two scanning devices, but when scanning slides & negatives with the cover from the underside of the lid removed, light shines down through the originals in their plastic holder. You are correct that the software has to tell the printer to scan this way.

I don't know if this software feature is in fact supported by HPLIP, but the C7180 from one year earlier scanned slides & negatives just like yours. Perhaps it might work if you added the printer as that model.

HPLIP does not currently support negative scanning. Currently we aren't planning on adding this functionality for past products, we -may- be adding it for future products, however we are still working on the technical considerations for implementation.
