Does the latest version include all previous version data?

Asked by David Martin

The common Linux OS for this query is Debian 12 Bookworm distro which includes HPLIP 3.22.10.

I need to install HP printers of different types and of various ages on several different machines also of various ages. All these machines do, however, comply with Debian's and HPLIP's minimum system requirements.

My problem is, "What version of HPLIP should I install on each machine?"

It would be nice if the latest HPLIP version included all the data for all the old machines.

But does it? Old printer data might be removed from newer HPLIP versions to save on size.

Please can someone let me know the position?

Thanks.

For printing and scanning on devices manufactured in the past
ten years or so I would be reading

  https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting

Otherwise, I would use bookworm's package.

I have never observed that to happen. Also see

Hope it goes well for you, David.

Users do install install an up-to-date HPLIP from upstream. Sometimes
ithe installation process goes well for them; sometimes it doesn't.

Please bear in mind that removing the answered tag makes the issue
open. Open Issues are removed after some time.
